In this paper, I carry out research as part of an integrated study on the roof-tile organization of old Japanese provincial temples. In it, I focus on the three provinces of Shinano, Echigo, and Sado, which have a deep geographical relationship, and discuss the formation and development of roof-tile organization. With respect to the Shinano provincial temple, although the construction of its buildings took place around the year 770, which is considerably later than in other provinces, I argue that perhaps prior to that time, temporary structures were built that used the same variety of temple roof-tiles as found in the local area. Regarding the tiles of the Echigo provincial temple, because there are not many related materials, I only introduced the specific characteristics of its roof-tile manufacturing technique. As for the roof-tiles of the Sado provincial temple, I organized their many types by lineage, and presented the possibility that the founding roof-tiles may have originally come along with the Sue pottery makers from Owari via Shinano and Echigo. I also pointed out the possibility that its founding period dates back to the late eighth century.

The present author visited El Salvador in August, 2007. In El Salvador, even the present, some workshops produce roof-tiles with craft of “Spanish roof-tiles” introduced by Spanish people. Current houses in El Salvador are roofed with concave flat-tiles, on the other hand eave tiles were not observed in this visit. As for the craft of roof-tiles production, workshops produce tiles with a table which make a tile concave. The structure of kilns built of bricks, with holes connected to the chamber for firing is similar to the structure of Japanese updraft kilns with roaster. This article shows results of ethnological researches which taken at 3 roof-tiles workshops in El Salvador. These results not only contribute to Salvadoran archaeology and ethnology, but also become ethnological data for the study about history of Japanese roof-tile production.

Gyoki (行基) is a famous and virtuous Buddhist priest in Nara period. He is known getting many supporters from the people and the local influential person by having performed much social work such as the construction of a bridge and the harbor facilities, the building of the hotels for travelers, and the digging of the pond and the ditch, while occasionally receiving persecution of the legal government. Furthermore, he had a legend that“Forty-nine Temples built by Gyoki”. But almost of these temples have not been discovered archeologically yet despite many archeologists and historians tried it. In this paper, we insists to approach how Gyoki and his believers group recognized ancient temples by comparing aspects of building or reconstructing of ancient temple with the presumed position of "forty-nine temples built by Gyoki" and other Gyoki-related temples in Izumi district, hometown of him.
