This study was primarily constructed to examine the effects of prompts and topics on EFL essay writing proficiency. In this study, three different types of essay prompts and topics were used to see if these different combinations make a difference in the quality of persuasive essay writing that EFL high school learners produced. Three groups of intermediate EFL high school learners performed persuasive essay writing tasks with three different prompts and topics respectively. The results of this study suggest that the clear directions in the prompt on any topic play a significant role in the quality of writing the learners are able to produce. Moreover, it is found that prompts or topics have a significant impact on learners' performance in different aspects of writing ability. The paper ends with making suggestions for pedagogy and essay writing assessment.
