The genetic relationships and taxonomic status of 7 taxa belonging to the genus Tridentiger (Pisces, Gobiidae) were investigated by means of analysis of allozymic variation at 14 loci. The results suggest that the two taxa "T. obscurus" and "T. brevispinis" which are sympatric and morphologically similar are reproductively isolated and are highly divergent from each other (the genetic distance values are 0.501-0.707). It is also suggested that "T. brevispinis" and "T. kuroiwae" are genetically different enough from each other to deserve subspecies at least. The other 4 taxa, "T. barbatus", "T. nudicervicus", "T. trigonocephalus" and "T. bifasciatus", are genetically divergent each and are considered to be 4 biological species. A dendrogram showing the phylogenetic relationships of the 7 taxa was constructed from the genetic distances.

The fish fauna of the Ano River in Mie Prefecture, central Japan, was surveyed between May 2013 and August 2013. A total of 1242 individuals of 38 species belonging to 15 families were collected from 13 stations and 3 species belonging to 3 families were visually confirmed. Six species, Dasyatis akajei, Opsariichthys uncirostris uncirostris, Microphis(Oostethus)brachyurus brachyurus, Plectorhinchus cinctus, Kuhlia marginata, Rhinogobius sp. BF, Rhinogobiussp. OM were newly added to the fish fauna of the Ano River. Six alien species were collected and seven species of threatened fishes in red list of Ministry of Environment Japan or in red databook of Mie Prefecture, such as Cottus reinii were collected. Two of these alien species, Micropterus salmoides and Lepomis macrochirus macrochirus were designated “Invasive Alien Species” by Invasive Alien Species Act (Law of Japan). Other four species, Acheilognathus rhombeus, Opsariichthys uncirostris uncirostris, Rhinogobius sp. OM, and Tachysurus nudiceps were domestic alien speceies and the former three species were evidently introduced from Lake Biwa basin. It seemed that a dam(1.8m in hight) which constructed in the middle leach of the river disturb diadromous migration. Control of alien species and improvement of the fish way on the dam are necessary to conserve fish biodiversity in the Ano River.

Interspecific differences in the ability to excrete urea in four gobiid fishes, Mugilogobius abei, M. chulae, M. sp. 1 and M. sp. 2, in response to elevated external ammonia, were compared and set against the phylogenetic relationships of species, following molecular phylogenetic analyses using a portion of mitochondrially-encoded 12S ribosomal RNA and tRNA-Val genes, which were sequenced from five species of Mugilogobius. The resulting tree, based on 710 base pairs of aligned sequences, was statistically robust and indicated two major clades, (M. abei, M. sp. 1 and M. chulae) and (M. parvus and M. sp. 2), respectively. High ureagenic ability was demonstrated in M. abei and M. sp. 1, being sister species according to the phylogenetic analysis, while the remaining species having a low level of ability. The two former species are restricted to temperate and subtropical Japan, whereas the others are widely distributed throughout tropical Asia. The most parsimonious reconstruction of these features suggested that ancestral Mugilogobius, probably widely distributed in tropical Asia, may had low ureagenic ability. The high ureagenic ability of the temperate species may have evolved concurrently with the northward spread of Mugilogobius from the tropical zone.
