Functional linguistics has been playing an important role for developing discourse analysis, pragmatics, and language acquisition. Therefore the point I wish to emphasize is that functional linguistics has also been furthering teaching methods for communication. This paper is intended as an investigation about the history of communicative language teaching based on functional linguistic theory, the relation between functional linguistics and communicative teaching, and English education which lays great emphasis on communication.
