学術用語"eigenvalue"は,固有値問題などに現れる「固有値」に対する用語として現在英語圏でよく使われている.しかし,"eigen"という冠頭の言葉は,もともとドイツ語で「固有の」または「特有の」という意味を表す言葉である.そこで,「固有値」に対する学術用語として"eigenvalue"が現在英語圏で何故使われているかを入手資料を元に考察する.

学術用語"eigenvalue"は,固有値問題などに現れる「固有値」に対する用語として現在英語圏でよく使われている.しかし,"eigen"という冠頭の言葉は,もともとドイツ語で「固有の」または「特有の」という意味を表す言葉である.そこで,「固有値」に対する学術用語として"eigenvalue"が現在英語圏で何故使われているかを入手資料を元に考察する.As you know well, in English the word of 'eigenvalue' is often used in the eigenvalue problem as compared with the other words, e.g. 'proper value' and 'characteristic value'. Then we become to have the following questions from this tendency. Who used first the word of 'eigenvalue' ? Who influenced greatly to the spread of 'eigenvalue' ? In this article, one answer will be shown based upon consideration from a number of references.
