Bisphenol A (BPA), a putative endocrine disruptor, may be taken up by humans via the diet and have adverse effects on human health. In this study, we evaluated whether the probiotics, Bifidobacterium breve strain Yakult (BbY) and Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS), could exert a protective effect against dietary exposure to BPA. A group of rats fed on a diet containing 5% BbY or 5% LcS showed three advantageous effects compared to the control group; (i) the area under the blood concentration-time curve of BPA after its oral administration was significantly decreased, (ii) the amount of BPA excreted in the feces was significantly greater (2.4 times), and (iii) the percentage of BPA bound to the sediment fraction of the feces was significantly higher. These results suggest that BbY and LcS reduced the intestinal absorption by facilitating the excretion of BPA, and that these probiotics may suppress the adverse effects of BPA on human health.

A unique genetic variation with respect to blast resistance was clarified in 201 rice accessions from Vietnam. These accessions were classified into three clusters—A, B1, and B2—based on their reactions to 26 standard differential blast isolates selected in Vietnam. Cluster A was the dominant cultivar group in Vietnam and the most susceptible of the three clusters. Cluster B1 was the smallest group and the most resistant. Cluster B2 was the second-most dominant group and of intermediate resistance between clusters A and B1. The percentages of accessions comprising each cluster varied by region and area. Accessions in cluster A were distributed widely throughout Vietnam and had the highest frequencies in both the Central and North regions. Accessions in cluster B2 were found with highest frequencies in the mountainous and intermediate areas of the North region. Accessions in cluster B1 were found with highest frequencies in the Central region and Red River Delta area (North region). These results suggest that rice accessions in Vietnam were basically susceptible (cluster A) or of intermediate resistance (cluster B2), and that high-resistance cultivars were mainly distributed in the low altitude areas, such as the Red River Delta area and Central region.

Gene-centromere (G-C) mapping provides insight into vertebrate genome composition, structure and evolution. Although medaka fish are important experimental animals, no genome-wide G-C map of medaka has been constructed. In this study, we used 112 interspecific triploid hybrids and 152 DNA markers to make G-C maps of all 24 linkage groups (LGs). Under the assumption of 50% interference, 24 centromeres were localized onto all corresponding medaka LGs. Comparison with 21 centromere positions deduced from putative centromeric repeats revealed that 19 were localized inside the centromeric regions of the G-C maps, whereas two were not. Based on the centromere positions indicated in the G-C maps and those of centromeric repeats on each LG, we classified chromosomes as either biarmed or monoarmed; n = 24 = 10 metacentrics/submetacentrics + 14 subtelocentrics/acrocentrics, which is consistent with the results of previous karyological reports. This study helps to elucidate genome evolution mechanisms, and integrates physical and genetic maps with karyological information of medaka.

In this study, we applied a gaze-contingent window method to measure the spatial distribution of visual attention while playing an action video game. The peripheral visual field of a player was restricted to an area around the gaze by masks with various spatial extents. The quantitative relationship between window size and game performance confirmed that superior players had a wider distribution of visual attention than inferior players. An additional analysis of eye movements showed that the mean length of saccadic eye movements (indicating an overt allocation of attention) of inferior players was comparable to that of superior players. These results suggest that the difference in game performance between inferior and superior players may be due to the qualitative difference in the efficiency of covert allocation of visual attention. The present study also indicates the applicability of the gazecontingent window method for the online evaluations of performance and learning during dynamic visual-motor tasks.
