Granitic and gabbroic xenoliths have been found within dacitic lavas in the Hime–shima volcanic group (HVG) of northeastern Kyushu, Japan. The HVG is located near the boundary between the Ryoke and Sangun belts, suggesting that the HVG and associated crustal xenoliths may provide insights into the subsurface distribution of the Ryoke and Sangun belts in Kyushu. This study focuses on xenoliths obtained from the coastal boulders near the Kane Lava of the HVG. The HVG xenoliths consist of gabbro, gabbroic diorite, amphibolite, gneiss, basaltic andesite, and tuffaceous sandstone, with the latter two types resembling those found in the basement rocks of the HVG. The gabbroic xenoliths are geochemically similar to gabbros in the Ryoke belt. The U–Pb dating for zircon in the gneiss xenoliths yielded a metamorphic age of ~ 111 Ma with Th/U values <0.1, similar to the age obtained for metamorphic rocks in or of the Ryoke belt. The new data presented in this study indicate that the xenoliths in the HVG were derived from basement units associated with the Ryoke belt, which in turn, means that the HVG is tectonically underlain by the Ryoke belt. This also suggests that the Ryoke belt extends further north in Kyushu than was previously considered, as implied by the presence of this belt directly below the HVG.

We have characterized the Sr-Nd-Pb isotopes and major and trace element compositions of 10 Quaternary volcanic rocks from the Yufu and Tsurumi volcanoes in northeast Kyushu, Japan. The enriched incompatible elements, negative Nb, and positive Pb and Sr anomalies are generally interpreted to be from island arc affinities of the lavas. However, the LREE/HREE ratio of the lavas (La/Yb = 8.5 ± 1.3) is greater than that from the island arc intermediate volcanics from northeast Japan (La/Yb = 3.8 ± 0.6), suggesting a different origin. One dacite sample had a Sr/Y ratio > 40, and the SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, Y, Yb, Sr, and 87Sr/86Sr compositions fell within the range of typical adakites. Other lavas were classified as normal island arc-type magmas. These results suggest that a partial melting of the subducting Philippine Sea Plate played a role in the genesis of the Yufu-Tsurumi volcanic rocks. The Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic compositions show evidence of mixing between melts, derived from oceanic basaltic crust and subducted terrigenous sediments for the adakite magma, whereas another source is required to explain the enrichment in Sr-Nd isotopes and depletion in Pb isotopes of the island arc-type magma. Although the island arc-type magma appears to have a different source, a mixing of the adakite magma with this magma is apparent from our observations of the trace elements and isotopes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of consuming small amounts of beer or a nonalcoholic beer taste beverage (non-beer) on gastric emptying and the polymorphisms in alcohol metabolism-related enzyme-encoding genes. Twenty male healthy volunteers were questioned regarding their alcohol consumption status, and body measurement was performed. The genetic polymorphisms in ADH1B (rs1229984, Arg47His) and ALDH2 (rs671 Glu487Lys) were analyzed. The subjects consumed 150 mL of beer or non-beer once per week, followed by the ingestion of 200 kcal of the test nutrient containing 13C-acetate 15 min later, after which the subjects’ exhalations were collected up to 120 min. The concentration peak of 13C was measured as Tmax. Diamine oxidase (DAO) activity for the marker of small intestinal function activity was also measured the day after the test. Gastric emptying was significantly slower in the group that consumed a small amount of beer, and in daily beer consumption group, and also in the ADH1B *2/*2, ALDH2 *1/*2 genotypes compared to non-beer drinking group. DAO values were not significantly changed between beer and non-beer group. The consumption of even a small amount of beer and the polymorphisms in ADH1B / ALDH2 affects gastric motility.
