[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate activities of the hip extensors and erector spinae during bridging exercise by using instruments with a laser pointer on the pelvic belt. [Subjects] Twelve subjects (age, 23 to 33 years) with non-specific low back pain volunteered for this study. [Methods] Subjects performed bridging exercises with and without trajectory exercises by using a laser pointer fixed to a pelvic strap. The erector spinae, gluteus maximus and hamstring activities with and without trajectory exercises using a laser pointer were recorded on using electromyography. [Results] Compared to the without laser pointer group, the group that underwent bridging with trajectory exercises using a laser pointer had significantly higher gluteus maximus activity and significantly lower erector spinae activity. Significantly higher gluteus maximus/erector spinae activity ratios were observed when performing trajectory exercises using a laser pointer during bridging exercises. [Conclusion] This result suggests that trajectory exercises using a laser pointer during a bridging exercise would be effective for improving gluteus maximus activity.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using a device for the self-measurement of cervical range of motion on neck pain experienced by a computer user. [Subject] A 39-year-old male subject with neck pain caused by working on a computer was selected for the study. [Methods] The instrument was developed for the study, and that the instrument is used to self-measure cervical range of movement. The subject was trained in self-measurement procedures and a self-exercise program for two months, and pain was controlled through self-assessment and a program. The pressure pain threshold for the upper trapezius muscle, and cervical ranges of motion were measured prior to and after the 2-month period of pain control. [Results] At the conclusion of self-measurement and the self-exercise program, the pressure pain threshold was higher than the initial pressure pain threshold, and all cervical ranges of motion increased compared to the initial cervical ranges of motion. [Conclusion] This result shows that the self-management device for cervical ROM is an effective tool for pain management for computer users with cervical pain.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to show the effects of the wearing of tight jeans on lumbar and hip movements during trunk flexion. [Subjects] Twelve male subjects were recruited. [Methods] The lumbar flexion angle and hip flexion angle were measured using a dual inclinometer during trunk flexion, with and without tight jeans. [Results] The lumbar flexion angle significantly increased when wearing tight jeans compared to not wearing and wearing of general jeans. The hip flexion angle significantly decreased when wearing tight jeans compared to not wearing and wearing of general jeans. [Conclusion] We suggest that tight jeans might limit normal lumbar and hip movements. So, abnormal lumbar and hip movements induced by tight jeans may be a cause of low back musculoskeletal disorders.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to show the effects of wearing a tight skirt on the VMO, VL, and TFL muscles during walking. [Subjects] Twelve female subjects were recruited. [Methods] The muscle activities of the VMO, VL, and TFL muscles were measured using a surface EMG system during walking while wearing a typical skirt and tight skirt. [Results] The VL and TFL muscle activities significantly increased, and VMO muscle activity significantly decreased when wearing a tight skirt. [Conclusion] We thought that a tight skirt might limit the normal gait. The abnormal gait movements resulting from wearing a tight skirt could cause imbalance of the VMO and VL.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to compare hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio between the accelerating and decelerating sections for anterior cruciate ligament protection during squat exercise. [Subjects and Methods] Nine asymptomatic males were enrolled in this study. The hamstring (medial part) and quadriceps (rectus femoris) muscle activities during squat exercise were measured, and the squat exercises were classified into two sections (accelerating and decelerating) by using an accelerometer. [Results] The hamstring-to-quadriceps ratio was significantly higher in the decelerating section than in the accelerating section during the squat exercise. [Conclusion] Application of an increasing decelerating section strategy during the squat exercise can prevent damage in patients with a weakened anterior cruciate ligament due to sports activities.

[Purpose] This study applied the lunge exercise using a variety of foot wedge boards to analyze differences in the muscle activities of the vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and the VMO/VL ratios. [Subjects] This study was performed on 20 asymptomatic males. [Methods] Surface electromyography measurements were obtained under 5 lunge exercise conditions. [Result] The EMG activity for the VL muscle significantly increased in the order of conditions as follows: anterior wedge < no wedge and medial wedge < lateral wedge and posterior wedge. The EMG activity for the VMO muscle significantly increased in the order of conditions as follows: anterior wedge < no wedge and lateral wedge < medial wedge and posterior wedge. The VMO/VL ratios under the medial wedge and posterior wedge conditions were significantly increased. [Conclusion] Use of medial and posterior wedge boards during the lunge exercise can selectively strengthen the VMO.

[Purpose] This study applied variable plank exercises on a stable surface consisting of a mat, on an unstable surface consisting of a dynamic cushion placed under the upper extremities and lower extremities. [Subjects] Forty-three healthy male and female subjects in their 20s voluntarily consented to participate in this study. [Methods] The subjects performed the plank exercises on the three support surfaces. Ultrasound imaging was conducted while they carried out plank exercises. [Results] The changes in the thicknesses of both the transversus abdominis and internal abdominal obliques were statistically more significant for LEDCP than for MatP. In addition, the changes in the thickness of the transversus abdominis were statistically more significant for LEDCP than for UEDCP. [Conclusion] Therefore, applying an unstable condition to the lower limbs using a dynamic cushion is considered more effective during plank exercises.

[Purpose] This study developed a reciprocal hip exercise using Thera-Band for those with flat lumbar spines and observed changes in standing and movement angles during sit-to-stand. [Participants and Methods] Eleven females participated in this study. The participants performed the reciprocal hip exercise using Thera-Band. [Results] The trunk flexion angle increased significantly after reciprocal hip exercise. The sit-to-stand time after reciprocal hip exercise was significantly faster than that before exercise. [Conclusion] The reciprocal hip exercise would useful for patients with flat back who can then sit and work for long periods.

[Purpose] This study examined the effects of the intrinsic foot muscle exercise combined with interphalangeal flexion exercise on metatarsalgia with Morton’s toe. [Subject] A 38-year-old male with Morton’s toe, who complained of pain in his left metatarsophalangeal joints was the subject. [Methods] The pressure pain threshold, peak contact pressure of the metatarsophalangeal region during gait, and the navicular drop were measured before and after the intrinsic foot muscles exercises combined with interphalangeal flexion exercise. [Results] After exercising for 2 weeks, the pressure pain threshold increased from 1 to 1.5 kg, while the peak contact pressure decreased from 0.63 to 0.50 kg/cm2, and the navicular drop improved from 5 to 8 mm. [Conclusion] The results show that the combined exercises alleviated the pain while walking by reducing the excessive pressure on the metatarsophalangeal region, and the improvement of gait with Morton’s toe.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to measure gluteal pressure and center of force (COF) during sitting in children with cerebral palsy (CP). [Subjects and Methods] The participants were five children with CP and five typically developing controls. We measured peak gluteal pressure and COF using the TekScan system. During the measurements, all children sat on the therapeutic table for 1 minute without back and foot support. [Results] The peak gluteal pressure and COF in children with CP were significantly higher than values in controls. [Conclusion] This study suggests that it is important to distribute hip pressure evenly and transfer COF in a forward direction during rehabilitation in children with CP.

[Purpose] This study examined the activation of the rhomboid muscle according to the angle of the arm. [Subjects and Methods] The current study was conducted on 15 healthy males. The participants performed the pulling exercise in 5 conditions. The surface electromyography system was used to measure the muscle activities of the rhomboid and upper trapezius. [Results] The activity of the upper trapezius in condition 5 was significantly increased compared to that in condition 4. The activity of the rhomboid in condition 4 was significantly increased compared to that in conditions 1 and 5. [Conclusion] This study showed that performing a pulling exercise with the arms raised above the head (shoulder flexion at 120°) is more effective for reducing upper trapezius tension, while also selectively strengthening the rhomboid muscle.

[Purpose] This study evaluated the effects of caregiver education on pulmonary rehabilitation of patients who have undergone lung resection for cancer. [Subjects] Patients were divided into experimental (n = 22) and control (n = 19) groups. [Methods] The caregivers of the experimental group patients received education on pulmonary rehabilitation, while the control group patients received general management advice for 4 weeks. [Results] Pulmonary muscle strength (maximum inspiratory pressure and maximum expiratory pressure) was increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group. Modified Borg scale scores were decreased significantly in the experimental vs. control group. [Conclusion] Providing caregivers with education pertaining to pulmonary rehabilitation was associated with improved pulmonary function in lung cancer patients following lung resection.
