The purpose of the paper is to examine the contents and a part of history of an Ainu collection which were collected by A.V. Grigor’ev at the time of Japanese stay for one year from 1879 to 1880: 1) Why did he stay in Japan? 2) What kinds of materials were collected by him? 3) Why did he begin research Ainu culture and collect Ainu materials?
