A new opticalmodulator in an optical fiber directional coupler, where the coupling of two optical fibers is electricauy controlled by Kerr effect, is proposed and experimentally verirled. This modulator consists of two parallel fiber cores immersed in a Kerr-effect liquid. The characteristic of this modulator is theoretically analyzed and it is shownthat a change of the refractive index by Kerr effect in theliquid in the order of 10(-4) is sufficient to a complete switching for the coupling length of 5 mm.
