The primary goal of this paper is a statistical investigation of the comparative form of Japanese Spoken Language using appropriable data from the ATR spoken language corpus. The analysis includes the choice of comparative phrase markers as well as more general comparative form phenomena. In addition the paper also examines the semantics of the Japanese comparative form and compares them with those of the English and French comparative forms. Also considered are the problems of describing the comparative form in a dictionary oriented J-E MT telephone conversation task. Finally some examples of description following the markers of the Japanese comparative form are shown.
