仏教では、女性は不浄な穢れた生き物と考えられてきた。そして、僧は女性と交接を行うことを「女犯」として戒律で禁じられ、そのため「女犯」の罪を避けるため、僧は男性、とりわけ稚児を交接の対象としてきたといわれている。
