An analytical method of structural shape, which belongs to the inverse problem in the field of structural analysis, is presented under the prescribed displacement mode. First, the loaddisplacement relation whose coefficient matrix is a function of an unknown position vector representing the structural shape, and the subsidiary condition for the prescribed displacement mode are formulated. Then, these two equations are analytically analyzed by using the-Bott ・ Duffin inverse matrix. The obtained nonlinear equation which is a function of a position vector is numerically analyzed by Newton-Raphson method and by steepest descent method. Numerical examples show the varidity of the proposed method.

We designed three towers which change configuration using electricity and oil pressure, exhibited in the International Exposition Tsukuba, Japan, 1985. 'Revolvo-balance Tower' is composed of 3 bars coupled by pins successively. Because of the eccentricity of mass, this tower moves very irregularly. 'Dancing Tower' is composed of 2 rigid trusses coupled and supported by 2 groups of 6 bars. Because of the geometrical characteristic, 2 trusses translate in holizontal circle. 'Extenso Tower' is composed of 2 groups of 8 triangular prisms coupled by pins. Because of the geometrical characteristic, the 2 groups moves simultaneously changing configuration, from folded to extended and from extended to folded.

Field observations, shear-wave velocity measurements and microtremor measurements were conducted to reveal the site conditions at twelve strong-motion sites where high amplitude strongmotion records were observed during the 1985 Chile earthquake (Ms 7.8). These field surveys suggested that the site conditions are divided into three types : 1) rock or rock-like ground, 2) stiff gravel ground and 3) rather soft soil ground. The analyses of the strong-motion records showed that the spectra are strongly characterized by these soil types and that the peak ground velocity values are affected by the site soil conditions.

Attenuation relations of peak ground acceleration and velocity are examined based on records from the 1985 Chile (M 7. 8) and the 1983 Nihonkai-chubu (M 7. 7) earthquakes for the purpose of predicting intensities of strong-motion during large earthquakes in subduction zone. The relations obtained from the Chilean records show that the effects of site geology and source directivity are significant. The relations from the Chilean records are consistent with the Japanese records when the effects of site amplification on the Japanese records are removed. The comparison of the relations with those of previous studies shows that the attenuation relations derived from U. S. data are different from those for these two earthquakes.
