This paper describes characterization of thermal imprinting of resins using a fabricated micro-multi-fin structured micro-electro-mechanical system(MEMS)mold to incorporate a structural color expression function.Through the MEMS fabrication process, micro-mold structures with 0.2-μm pitch inclined micro-multi-fin structures on the sidewalls of microscale ridges(structures resembling a morpho butterfly)were fabricated on Si substrates. Shape transfer properties related to thermal imprinting of cycloolefin polymer(COP)and polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA)were examined using the fabricated MEMS mold with an inclined multi-fin structure. Thermal imprinting was conducted under various temperature conditions related to the measured glass transition points of resins obtained via dynamic mechanical analysis. The multi-fin shape(a 4-μm pitch ridge structure with a 0.2-μm pitch inclined multi-fin structure)was transferred to the COP and PMMA. The molding resin fin widths increased along with increasing molding temperature. Also, adhesion between the mold and the resin improved, which made release of the resin from the mold difficult. Finally, the imprinted PMMA exhibited a light blue reflection(380-500 nm).

Fine particle bombarding(FPB)is typically used to modify metal surfaces by bombardment with fine particles at high speed. After bombardment with particles ranging in diameter from several to tens of micrometers, fine microscale concavities and convexities are formed on a surface. We have reported that SUS304 stainless steel with such a microscale rough surface formed by FPB shows antibacterial activity. However, SUS304 includes some metal ions such as Co and Ni, which are known as antibacterial metals. To demonstrate that microscale roughness only expresses the antibacterial property, we coated diamond-like carbon(DLC)onto the FPB treated surface of SUS304 substrate, and used it for antibacterial property tests against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Consequently, we also confirmed that the DLC-coated FPB surface has antibacterial performance. This finding indicates that the antibacterial performance is not dependent on the material properties, but rather on the surface roughness.

The autocatalytic chemical deposition of lead has been achieved using titanium trichloride as the reducing agent. Lead film was deposited onto the non-conductive substrate to the intended thickness at a rate of 520Å/min. The optimum bath composition was; lead chloride 0.04M, trisodium citrate 0.20∼0.40M, disodium EDTA 0.08∼0.16M, NTA 0.20M, and titanium trichloride 0.03∼0.05M. The pH was 9.0 (adjusted with ammonia) and the temperature 60°C. Measurements of UV and visible absorption spectra revealed that NTA, EDTA and citric acid mainly formed complex salts with Ti3+, Pb2+ and Ti4+ respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystal structure of the deposited film was not affected by bath composition and plating condition.

This study investigated synergic effects of phosphoric acid(H3PO4), amino-propyltriethoxysilane(3-APS)and ammonium metavanadate(NH4VO3)in a conversion coating on electro-galvanized steel(EG)to clarify EG corrosion suppression by these substances.Results showed that the ratio of white rust during salt spray testing(SST)was lessened when a coating was formed with 3-APS and H3PO4. The phenomenon was explained: adding 3-APS into H3PO4 causes the decrease of corrosion resistance by suppressing salt water uptake in the coating because the coating itself became compact. Moreover, a coating formed with NH4VO3, 3-APS, and H3PO4 exhibited higher corrosion resistance in SST than a coating with 3-APS and H3PO4. Results show that NH4VO3 changed more into tetravalent or trivalent vanadium by oxidation reaction of zinc when the coating was formed together with 3-APS and H3PO4 on EG. These vanadium compounds in the coating were estimated as dissolved easily in the case in which salt water permeated into coating. The compounds were then deposited at the corroded area to reduce EG corrosion. These findings suggest that NH4VO3, 3-APS, and H3PO4 in the conversion coating contributed both to the high barrier and to self-protective effects of the coating.
