EV category of the Student Formula Japan Competition will be an official event in 2013. In order to optimize the regulations of the category, we have developed an EV based on a vehicle driven by an engine for the student formula. At first, our prototype motor was applied to its traction motor and the test run was performed, and we developed an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) suitable for the formula by analyzing the test data. Furthermore, we developed a motor which achieved higher power density and correspondence to the regulation. This paper introduces the developed IPMSM.

The switching of LLC converter becomes hard switching at the time of overload. In this study, we elucidated the mechanism of hard switching and the current path. The reason of hard switching is the commutation of magnetizing current to the secondary side. It is possible to make a judgement whether overload or not from the voltage value at the end of resonance. Voltage value can be obtained from the circuit constants. In this way, it becomes possible to judge the success or failure of soft switching from the circuit constants.

Nowadays, interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs), generally driven by PWM inverters, are mainly utilized as the traction motors of eco-friendly vehicles. As a result of the carrier harmonics of the input current by PWM inverters, harmonic losses of IPMSMs become higher than those of IPMSMs with ideal current input. This paper discusses the characteristics of the proposed double-layered IPMSM and the conventional single-layered IPMSM with current inputs where the PWM carrier frequencies were set to 5, 10, and 20 kHz, respectively, which reveals the influence of various carrier frequencies on the performance of IPMSMs.

A three-phase voltage-fed converter operated by a two-phase PWM scheme offers relatively high ac voltage, low switching times, and low switching losses in comparison to that operated by a three-phase PWM scheme. However, the harmonics involved in the ac-side voltages and currents produced in the two-phase PWM scheme are distributed over a wide frequency range, which can be a significant drawback depending on its applications. Therefore the authors examine the problem using wavelet transform.

This paper proposes a novel co-operational control method of LED driver, consisting of voltage and current sourced flyback converters. In the proposed method, both the flyback converters are controlled by the LED reference current to obtain wide range variable light control from 10 % to 100 %. Digital computer simulation is implemented to confirm the validity of the proposed method and demonstrate that the minimum on time of the MOSFET is longer than 1 μs even under the operation of 10 % of the LED rated current.
