It is well known that A.D. Lindsay (1879-1952) found out one of sources of the modern democracy in the Protestantism, especially in the seventeenth-century England Puritanism. In order to address the complex interactions between the modern democracy and Protestantism including Puritanism, in this article I critically explore A.D. Lindsay's theory of democracy and its relation with Puritanism, focusing on his democratic theory on discussion, consent, voluntary association and so on. By doing so, I will reconsider issues on the Post-war democracy in Japan where Lindsay's political thought had been translated and introduced before and after the Second World War.
