It is well known that A.D. Lindsay (1879-1952) found out one of sources of the modern democracy in the Protestantism, especially in the seventeenth-century England Puritanism. In order to address the complex interactions between the modern democracy and Protestantism including Puritanism, in this article I critically explore A.D. Lindsay's theory of democracy and its relation with Puritanism, focusing on his democratic theory on discussion, consent, voluntary association and so on. By doing so, I will reconsider issues on the Post-war democracy in Japan where Lindsay's political thought had been translated and introduced before and after the Second World War.

In this paper, I propose a strong contribution of the nineteenth century Unitarian feminists upon the twentieth century's crusade for women's rights. Numerous studies have been performed concerning the Women's Suffrage movement of the twentieth century and the history of women's political thought from the early eighteenth century to the present. On the contrary, there have been few investigations focusing on the Unitarian feminist movement; therefore, I present this research, based upon Autobiography by Harriet Martineau, who was an influential Unitarian writer of the Victorian era. Reference will also be made to reports published in The English Woman's Journal that relate to Unitarian society.

From the end of the 19^<th>-century to the dawn of the 20^<th>, the New York Leisure Class socialized in order to make their wealth conspicuous. First, I will discuss the influence of Puritanism in creating the society of the New York Leisure Class with respect to their God-given vocation, their wealth, their consumption and their leisure practices. Second, I will study how Old New Yorkers transformed the areas in which they socialized. At first, it was within the private sphere, such as their own mansions, but it then moved to the public sphere, such as in gigantic hotels and newly introduced restaurants, as the newly Riches began to rise in society.
