Research and development (R&D) has helped to maintain the high safety and service standards of the Tokaido Shinkansen since it first started operations almost 50 years ago. Recent R&D has involved large-scale field data collection and work by the Komaki Research Center. This paper discusses some examples of R&D innovations for the Tokaido Shinkansen, which reflect the developments in R&D approaches over time. One example is earthquake countermeasures, focusing on the derailment and deviation countermeasures for the Tokaido Shinkansen. Anti-derailing guard rails and post-derailment stoppers were developed and various experiments were conducted in order to not only confirm the efficacy of the earthquake countermeasures but also elucidate derailment mechanisms. The other example is condition monitoring systems. The bogie vibration detection system, which is one example of a condition monitoring system, is developed and installed on the Series N700A trainsets to monitor all bogies' conditions. These achievements of R&D further enhanced safe and reliable transportation of the Tokaido Shinkansen.

Passive dynamic walking requiring little exertion is one way of realizing efficient bipedal locomotion. In this case, forces should be converted only to shape ideas for the bottom leg, which naturally alternates the vibration of the roll and yaw axes. To achieve our objectives, in this study we focus on a spinning top, and the change in the direction of movement about the rotation axis was defined as irregular motion. It was shown that this method of realizing motion axis conversion occurred during rotation. An initial angular velocity is generated on the center axis of the solid body's curved surface, and changed the motion into a backspin. First, it was confirmed that we can accurately describe a half ellipsoid as a twisted solid curved surface on its center axis. Next we changed the contact point. By adjusting the angular momentum, we also showed the method of momentum vector conversion through friction. We extracted the constraint condition, and a translational direction element of the angular momentum vector was synthesized. Finally, we showed a method for converting the irregular motion into translational motion, so that the irregular motion can realize a twist angle and an ellipsoid shape.

In winter, the northern part of Japan has very deep and heavy snow, and faces the problem of freezing of the road surface. People have difficulty to walk along a sidewalk and to move from place to place in winter. This study aims to achieve efficient wintertime sidewalk administrator by applying developed ITS technologies to the snowplow. This paper describes the analysis of snow removal task on sidewalk, the mechanical type of rotary snowplow, and proposes information guidance system using Head-Up-Display, which is expected to be practically used in the near future.
