This study deals with the nondestructive discremination between the corona bond and the nugget in the spot welds using a newly developed ultrasonic measurement with the line focussed probe. Four types of spot welded specimens were prepareed. The transmission charactaristics of ultrasound in the nugget was investigated by the measurement of one sheet specimen, which were made by grinding after removing upper plate of spot welds. The nugget size was measured by the scanning measurement over the spot welded specimens with and without the indentation. The measurement result of one sheet specimen showed that the reflected wave from the back wall in the nugget exhibited higher or lower amplitude than that in the base metal, which depended on the water path in the measurement. The scannning results of spot welds also showed that the nugget was possible to discriminate from the corona bond as long as the indentation in the surface was shallow.

In order to improve the aerodynamic performance of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT), effects of pitch angle of rotor blades were numerically investigated. To solve the complicated turbulent flow field around moving airfoils with small computers, discreet vortex methods were utilized. The numerical result shows that the pitch angle is important factor to improve the aerodynamic performance. In the case of pitch angle is 1 degree, an angle of attack becomes small at upwind position of the rotor blade, and therefore, flow separation is restrained at upwind part of the VAWT. As a result, the power coefficient is 10 % larger than that of the conventional (pitch angel is 0 degree) VAWT.

Such as engines with driving pistons, it is important to understand gas flows in the cylinder to design more efficient intake and exhaust system. Above all, we have to consider the pressure distribution at near the spark plug caused by the shape of flow channel. In this paper, the numerical method of fluid-solid interactions for unsteady flow is used to demonstrate the gas flow driven by intake, compression, ignition and exhaust in the cylinder attributed to the motion of piston-crank system. As a result, the cell-motor torque contributes the piston-crank motion, consequently the compression phase is reproduced properly. In the future study, we try to consider other phases of the four-cycle engine for more detailed analysis.

This paper deals with a driving stability analysis method of a kart considering an elastic deformation of the kart frame. The stiffness matrix of the kart frame was calculated with the finite element method, and the vertical load of each tire simulation was analyzed with this stiffness matrix. In addition, the vertical load distribution was examined with tests to validate the stiffness matrix, and it was confirmed that the experimental results agree with simulation results. Furthermore, the driving stability was evaluated with simulations, and it was observed that the elastic deformation of the kart frame effects on the steering characteristic.

The phenomena with relation to fluid mechanics are often taken up in books on science for popular readers. However, the explanation on principle of them has been described under misunderstood knowledge on fluid mechanics in many books. It seems the reason that the many authors are not understood fluid mechanics enough. Also, there is the further reason in the descriptions involved mistaken explanations in many books. In present study the mechanism of transmission of so misunderstood explanations has been considered, and the diffusion of them has been investigated. It is also examined and proposed how to prevent the transmission and diffusion.

Author already reported the field work results of waterwheel that has scooping plates and chains that was preserved in the Wu Institute of Wuxi in Jiangsu province of China. The waterwheel was called Longguo che (dragon waterwheel). By using the measurement values of the parts, the standard of the ruler was clarified. The author reported a field survey result of the length of the ruler about 4600 years before, called "Nippur cubit" which was named by the excavation place. Including these reports, the results that examined the concrete numerical value of the ruler in the East and West world based on literature and field survey is reported in this paper.

In this paper, the student's interests to the mini-4WD are described. This interest is based on the comic and cartoon, and these technologies can be realized by recently ITS. In the college PBL, students were trying to mini-4WD like ITS. And future plan are described.
