小崎が社長に選ばれた時、彼は「宣教師たちからも完全な承認を得たのに何故、アメリカン・ボードと手を切らねばならなかったのか。「古い関係」を切って「新しい関係」を築きたかったからである。アメリカン・ボードの代表団が来日し、話し合いがあったが、分裂に終わった。同志社は外国人の管理から独立と自由を獲得し、宣教師は正統主義キリスト教の道から逸脱したと思われる学校と完全に手を切った。困難な経営と聖書削除の問題で小崎は辞任した。When Kozaki was elected, missionaries "heartily welcome" him as principal. They, however, could not have good relationships. American Board sent deligation to Japan to talk about three items. One of them was religion of Doshisha. The deligation asked Kozaki to make declaration of faith but he rejected it. The talk was not successful and separation came. Doshisha was independent of American Board but the management was hard and Kozaki resigned.
