There is a good correlation between the <I>S</I>-<I>N</I> curve and crack growth law in carbon steel. Also, the fatigue limit of that can be evaluated from the param-eters of hardness and crack initiation conditions. The crack initiation behavior is related to the distribution of microstructures and the sizes of inclu-sions. Therefore, when the fatigue limit and life of carbon steel are predicted, it is better to consider the initial crack length and crack growth behavior. In this study, one such case was investigated by push-pull with constant stress amplitude by using 0.45% carbon steel. The initial crack lengths were varied with the specimen used and testing conditions. The prediction method of the <I>S</I>-<I>N</I> curve from a corrected crack growth law in such case was pro-posed. Also, a method of prediction of fatigue limit and life from the point of safety was discussed in this study.

Demand for hydrogen is rapidly growing in the current environmental approach to meeting requirements of extremely low-sulfur and increasingly light fuels. The trend toward increase in hydrogen demand is expected to be accelerated with development and commercialization of fuel cell and synthesis fuel oil which are both attracting widespread attention as clean energy technologies. The steam reforming process, which has been used as the most popular industrial hydrogen production technology, is outlined here. The life cycle assessment, which rates net emissions of greenhouse gases from the steam reforming process, is also introduced. In addition, efficient methods for increasing the capacity of the steam reforming process are explained in the light of increasing calls in recent years for revamping hydrogen plants.

There is a good correlation between the static strength and fatigue limit in many carbon steels. However, in the case of some commercially sold carbon steel, the fatigue limit cannot be evaluated from the static strength. Care should be taken when those materials are used for ma-chine equipment. In the case of some materials, there is decrease in fa-tigue limit from the expected values of Vickers hardness. In this study, one such case was investigated by push-pull. The examinations of the <I>S</I>-<I>N</I> curves and crack growth behavior were performed. Then, it was discussed that decrease in fatigue limit was related to the existence of inclusions or defects of unexpectedly large size. When such material as used in the present study is used for a machine equipment, the decrease of fatigue limit should be taken into account to determine an applied load.

In these environmentally sensitive times, bolted flanged joint design that makes the leakage from a joint a design criterion has been investigating. However, achieving uniform bolt preload is difficult when tightening pipe flanges with a number of bolts, even if the appropriate amounts of bolt preload can be calculated following established design rules. A guideline for bolted flange joint assembly has been presented by ASME. However, the guideline needs repeated bolt-up operations to get uniform preloads. In this study, in order to establish a more effective bolt assembly guideline, numerical calculations are systematically executed by using three-dimensional finite element analysis. The analytical objects are pipe flanges of class 150lb and 300lb raised face slip-on welding type specified in JPI with a compressed asbestos sheet gasket inserted. The variations of bolt preload and contact pressure distributions at the gasket bearing surface during bolting up are estimated.

Fatigue crack growth tests of rolled magnesium alloy AZ31 were performed with a side-notch plate specimen under negative mean stress conditions. In the results of the present study, even if the experimental conditions were the same, the crack growth behavior varied depending on the condition of the specimen and depending on the microstructure. The local friction between large size and small size crystals and the shear deformation are expected to be related to the crack closure. The crack growth rate was affected by the crack opening stress. When the crack growth rate was lower level, the crack closure behavior worked due to the plastic deformation and the roughness of the fracture surface. There was local rough pattern which work as the shear lip at sides of the crack surface.

High speed vacuum pumping cryopumps for neutral beam injection heating system are presented. Cryo-condensation pumps had been mainly used in large vacuum devices with high gas load and high vacuum operation. However, recently cryosorption pumps with GM cryocooler have been developed for high speed vacuum pump. Cryo-condensation pump is tough to high heat load, on the other hand cryo sorption pump is easy to operate. The features of these two types of cryopump are explained.

It is a responsibility for every structural engineer of power plants, refineries, gas plants and chemical plants to design and construct high quality pressure vessels and piping system. To complete this responsibility, it is very important to understand failure modes of pressure vessels, piping and their components, relation between each failure mode and stresses, and design consideration to prevent the failure. In this paper, basic characteristics of each failure mode are described with several examples of failure accident. Typical failure modes described here are a ductile rupture, brittle fracture, excessive deformation, instability (buckling) , progressive deformation (ratcheting) , fatigue fracture, creep rupture, creep ratcheting, creep-fatigue interaction, creep buckling, and environment effect on cracking. For these failure modes, the relation with stresses and design consideration are emphasized.

Factors regarding the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) have drastically changed in the development of the gas turbine and needs of a higher thermal efficiency in recent years.In the early 90's, gas turbine firing temperature increased from 1000°C which established in the 70's, to 1300°CAs a result, plant thermal efficiency improved from 40% to around 49% due to increasing the capacity of HRSG and the adoption of higher steam conditions in the reheat/triple-pressure system instead of the conventional non-reheat/single pressure system.Here, subjects of the performance, system, structure and control in reheat/triple-pressure type HRSG are reported.

The verification test of machine diagnosis techniques was carried out by Japan Power Engineering and inspection Corporation, and a system called as the RET (Residual Life Evaluation of Thermal Power Plants) system was developed as the result of this activity. The RET system can evaluate the primary damage of equipments in boiler or turbine using several residual life evaluation methods. The RET system provides valuable function for the residual life evaluation. However, this system is not necessarily utilized widely. In this study, online version of the RET system is developed for the purpose of populization of the RET system. The online RET system can evaluate the primary damage of the equipments in boiler or turbine without any extra application, and is easy to reflect new information.
