Patients regularly taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin (IND) have a risk of small intestinal injuries. In this study, we have developed an oral nanotherapeutics by using a redox nanoparticle (RNPO), which is prepared by self-assembly of an amphiphilic block copolymer that possesses nitroxide radicals as side chains of hydrophobic segment via ether linkage, to reduce inflammation in mice with IND-induced small intestinal injury. The localization and accumulation of RNPO in the small intestine were determined using fluorescent-labeled RNPO and electron spin resonance. After oral administration, the accumulation of RNPO in both the jejunum and ileum tissues was about 40 times higher than those of low-molecular-weight nitroxide radical compounds, and RNPO was not absorbed into the bloodstream via the mesentery, thereby avoiding the adverse effects of nitroxide radicals in the entire body. RNPO remarkably suppressed inflammatory mediators such as myeloperoxidase, superoxide anion, and malondialdehyde in the small intestines of IND-treated mice. Compared to low-molecular-weight nitroxide radical compounds, RNPO also significantly increased the survival rate of mice treated daily with IND. On the basis of these results, RNPO is promising as a nanotherapeutics for treatment of inflammation in the small intestine of patients receiving NSAIDs.

A new sesquiterpene with an α-methylene-γ-lactone moiety, artabolide (1), and three known derivatives 2–4 were isolated from Artemisia absinthium. The structure of 1 was elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR analyses, and the absolute configuration was determined using the modified Mosher's method and X-ray crystal structural analysis. Approximately 2.5 μg/plant treatment of artabolide (1) exhibited ca. 50% inhibition of polar auxin transport in radish hypocotyls, while 2–4 showed no significant inhibitory activity. Therefore, these results support the importance of the α-methylene-γ-lactone moiety for the inhibition of polar auxin transport.

Fcα/μR (CD351) is an Fc receptor for both IgA and IgM and forms an atypical dimer that is resistant to reduction by 2-mercaptoethanol or boiling. We previously demonstrated that the cytoplasmic portion of Fcα/μR is required for dimer formation and for its efficient cell-surface expression. However, the biochemical nature of these phenomena has not been determined. By using a BW5147 mouse cell line expressing deletion mutants of the cytoplasmic region of Fcα/μR, we found that the region spanning amino acids 504–523 was required for efficient cell-surface expression, whereas the region spanning amino acids 481–490 was required for dimmer formation. Immunoblotting analyses of transfectants simultaneously expressing Flag-tagged Fcα/μR and hemagglutinin-tagged Fcα/μR suggested that Fcα/μR does not form homodimers. Instead, our data suggest that Fcα/μR forms heterodimers with an as-yet-unknown molecule with a molecular weight of 60–70 kDa.

Mutations and polymorphisms of factor H gene (FH1) are known to be closely involved in the developmentof atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). Several groups have identified disease risk mutations andpolymorphisms of FH1 for the development of aHUS, and have investigated frequencies of aHUS in a numberof ethnic groups. However, such studies on Japanese populations are limited. In the present study,we analyzed FH1 in Japanese aHUS patients and healthy volunteers, and examined whether those variantsimpacted on a tendency for the development of aHUS in Japanese populations. Similar to previousstudies, we found that a high frequency of FH1 mutations, located in exon 23 of FH1, encodes short consensusrepeat 20 in C-terminal end of factor H molecule in patients with aHUS (40%), but not in healthyvolunteers. Interestingly, no significant differences in frequency of well-known disease risk polymorphismsfor aHUS were observed between healthy volunteers and aHUS patients. Our results suggestedthat although FH1 mutations relates to the development of Japanese aHUS in accordance with other ethnicstudies, other factor may be required for factor H polymorphism to be a risk factor of Japanese aHUS.

Neutrophils play a central role in host defenses against infectious microbial pathogens. However, molecular basis for their triggering signals has been incompletely understood. Here, we show molecular and functional characteristics of myeloid-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor (MAIR)-IV. MAIR-IV was preferentially expressed on neutrophils in the peripheral blood, bone marrow, peritoneal cavity and spleen. MAIR-IV physically associates with immunoreceptor tyrosine based activating motif (ITAM)-bearing adaptor FcRγ chain. Cross-linking MAIR-IV with anti-MAIR-IV monoclonal antibody significantly induced secretion of proinflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 from neutrophils. Thus, MAIR-IV may regulate activation of neutrophils and play an important role for innate immunity.

Fcα/μR is expressed not only in lymphoid, but also in non-lymphoid organs, including kidney. However, molecular and functional characteristics of Fcα/μR, particularly expressed in non-lymphoid organs, have remained unclear. Here we identified an isoform of Fcα/μR in the murine kidney on the C57BL/6J background. The kidney expressed only the isoform, which was not expressed in other lymphoid and non-lymphoid organs, and this isoform binds both IgA and IgM. Immunohistochemical analyses suggested that the Fcα/μR isoform was expressed in the tubular epithelial cells, but not in the glomeruli. This was confirmed by flow cytometry analysis of isolated tubular epithelial cells and by RT-PCR analyses using the separately excised glomerular and tubular regions by the laser microdissection system. These results suggest that Fcα/μR may not be involved in IgA deposition in glomerular mesangium cells in IgA nephropathy. Rather, it may play an important role in immunity in the renal tubular regions.

This paper proposes a semi-autonomous collision avoidance system for the prevention of collisions between vehicles and pedestrians and objects on a road. The system is designed to be compatible with the human-centered automation principle, i.e., the decision to perform a maneuver to avoid a collision is made by the driver. However, the system is partly autonomous in that it turns the steering wheel independently when the driver only applies the brake, indicating his or her intent to avoid the obstacle. With a medium-fidelity driving simulator, we conducted an experiment to investigate the effectiveness of this system for improving safety in emergency situations, as well as its acceptance by drivers. The results indicate that the system effectively improves safety in emergency situations, and the semi-autonomous characteristic of the system was found to be acceptable to drivers.

In this study, we investigate numerically the terahertz radiation from the mesa-structured intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs). The Sine–Gordon equation for inside of the mesa, and the Maxwell equation for outside of the mesa, are solved simultaneously. We consider the influence of a hot spot in the mesa where jc locally decreases, and calculate the radiation power as a function of the voltage. We observe strong radiation when the ac Josephson frequency satisfies the cavity resonance condition. For this strong radiation from the IJJs mesa, we calculate the radiation patterns. The radiation patterns reflect the existence of two types of internal modes: a uniform background mode and a cavity resonance mode. Furthermore, the radiation patterns are strongly affected by the diffraction at substrate edges.

In order to understand the radiation observed from the intrinsic Josephson junctions in triangular Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ mesas, we calculate the transverse magnetic (TM) electromagnetic modes for thin equilateral cavities. A new set of distinct but degenerate TM modes coexists with the known modes of Helszajn and James, but are expected to lead to distinct radiation angular distribution patterns. Although we have been unable to solve for the exact TM modes of a thin cavity of general acute isosceles triangular shape, we solved exactly the closely related problems of the TM cavity modes of two thin circumscribing “pie-shaped” wedges, which provide highly accurate approximations to very acute isosceles triangular cavities.

We describe and characterize a multiplex CARS microspectroscopic system that uses a nanosecond supercontinuum generated from a photonic crystal fiber and a sub-nanosecond pulse laser. This system has a high spectral resolution (<0.1 cm−1) and an ultrabroadband spectral coverage (>2500 cm−1). The estimated spatial resolutions are 0.45 μm (lateral) and 4.5 μm (axial), respectively. This system enables us to obtain CARS spectra and corresponding images in the fingerprint region as well in the CH stretch region. Using this system, we have successfully obtained label-free and multi-mode vibrational images of a yeast cell.

Japan is now preparing to incorporate PCV-7 into the national childhood immunisation programme. Our recently published economic evaluation of using PCV-7 to the birth cohort suggests that the cost to gain one QALY is lower than the WHO's cost-effectiveness criterion for intervention. However, many countries have started to introduce PCV-13 into their national immunisation schedule replacing PCV-7 for preventing pneumococcal diseases among young children. These raise the need to appraise the ‘value for money’ of replacing PCV-7 with PCV-13 vaccination programme in Japan.We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis with Markov model and calculated incremental cost effectiveness ratios (ICERs). Our base-case analyses, which assumed both PCVs have no net indirect effect and set the cost of PCV-7/PCV-13 per shot at ¥10,000 (US$125)/¥13,000 (US$163).The results show that in Base-case A (assumed PCV-13 has no additional protection against AOM compared to PCV-7), replacing PCV-7 with PCV-13 will cost ¥37,722,901 (US$471,536) or ¥35,584,455 (US$444,850) per QALY when the caregiver's productivity loss is not included or is included, respectively. While in Base-case B (assumed PCV-13 has additional protection against AOM compared to PCV-7), ¥343,830 (US$4298) per QALY or more QALY is gained by saving money without or with caregiver's productivity loss, respectively.We also find that, in Base-case B if cost per PCV-13 shot is equal to or less than that ¥17,000, then a PCV-13 vaccination programme offered to the birth cohort in Japan is likely to be a socially acceptable option compared to the current PCV-7 vaccination programme. Furthermore, if cost per PCV-13 shot is equal to or less than ¥12,000, replacing PCV-7 with PCV-13 will save money and gain more QALYs. While in Base-case A, the replacement can only be socially acceptable if cost per PCV-13 shot is equal to or less than ¥11,000.

This study examines the effects of the inclusion of the co-benefits on the potential installed capacity of carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) projects with a linear programming model by the clean development mechanism (CDM) in India's power sector. It is investigated how different marginal damage costs of air pollutants affect the potential installed capacity of CCS projects in the CDM with a scenario analysis. Three results are found from this analysis. First, large quantity of IGCC with CCS becomes realizable when the certified emission reduction (CER) prices are above US$56/tCO2 in the integrated Northern, Eastern, Western, and North-Eastern regional grids (NEWNE) and above US $49/tCO2 in the Southern grid. Second, including co-benefits contributes to decrease CO2 emissions and air pollutants with introduction of IGCC with CCS in the CDM at lower CER prices. Third, the effects of the co-benefits are limited in the case of CCS because CCS reduces larger amount of CO2 emissions than that of air pollutants. Total marginal damage costs of air pollutants of US$250/t and US$200/t lead to CER prices of US$1/tCO2 reduction in the NEWNE grid and the Southern grid.

With the development of CO2 capture technologies, the cryogenic approach provides a promising alternative for greenhouse effect mitigation. In previous work, a novel CO2 capture process was developed based on Stirling coolers (SC). However, the properties of frosted CO2 that deposits onto the heat exchanger of SC are not completely understood but it plays an important role as a heat transfer medium and affects subsequent CO2 deposition. In order to improve the system performance and capture efficiency, a thorough analysis of the CO2 frost process becomes especially significant. Based on this aim, numerical and experimental analysis of CO2 frost formation in the cryogenic capture process has been investigated in the present work. The results show that the frosted CO2 layer significantly influences the heat transfer between the gas stream and cooling fins. Over time (from 0 to 60 min), the thickness of the frost layer increased from 0 to 3.0 mm. The thermal conductivity increased from 0 to 0.4 W/(m K). When the flow rate was set at 1 L/min, the temperature of the cold head of the SC varied from −105.2 °C to −102.1 °C. When the flow rate was 3 L/min, the temperature rose from −106.3 °C to −98.0 °C.

AbstractObjectivesThe primary objective of this study was to compare youth athletes from two culturally distinct nations (Germany and Japan) on key aspects of their psychological make-up (goal orientation, fear of evaluation) and perceived coach support.DesignData were obtained with questionnaires distributed during a training session and analyzed with regression as well as multivariate and univariate analyses of variance.MethodThere were 56 German (30 female, 26 male) and 117 Japanese (60 female, 57 male) swimmers with a mean age of 13.2 (SD = 2.0) and 14.1 (SD = 1.8) years, respectively. All of the athletes participated regularly in high-level competitions.ResultsAs hypothesized, the German athletes were more task than ego oriented and more task focused than the Japanese, whereas the latter group had higher ego orientation scores than the German swimmers and put similar emphasis on both task and ego concerns. Contrary to expectations, however, there were no differences between the national cohorts in evaluative fear. The Japanese swimmers perceived their training climates to be more competition oriented than did the German participants. In terms of coach–athlete interactions, the German athletes reported significantly more instruction, positive feedback, and social support than the Japanese. Coach variables contributed significantly to the Japanese participants' feelings of satisfaction, with no such correlations in the German sample.ConclusionsResults are interpreted through cultural traditions and may be partly explained by differences in individualism. Practical recommendations for coaches and consultants are offered in light of the research findings.

In this paper, we consider tests of correlation when the sample size is much lower than the dimension. We propose a new estimation methodology called the extended cross-data-matrix methodology. By applying the method, we give a new test statistic for high-dimensional correlations. We show that the test statistic is asymptotically normal when p→∞p→∞ and n→∞n→∞. We propose a test procedure along with sample size determination to ensure both prespecified size and power for testing high-dimensional correlations. We further develop a multiple testing procedure to control both family wise error rate and power. Finally, we demonstrate how the test procedures perform in actual data analyses by using two microarray data sets.

In this paper, we assume that dimensions mean the large inductive dimension Ind and the covering dimension dim. It is well known that View the MathML source for each metric space X. J. Kulesza (1995) [7] proved the theorem that every compact metric n-dimensional dynamical system with zero-dimensional set of periodic points can be covered by a compact metric zero-dimensional dynamical system via an at most (n+1)n-to-one map. In this paper, we generalize Kuleszaʼs theorem above to the case of arbitrary metric spaces, and improve the theorem. In fact, we prove that every metric n-dimensional dynamical system with zero-dimensional set of periodic points can be covered by a metric zero-dimensional dynamical system via an at most 2n-to-one closed map. Moreover, we also study periodic dynamical systems. We show that each finite-dimensional periodic dynamical system can be covered by a zero-dimensional periodic dynamical system via a finite-to-one closed onto map.
