The present article illustrates cultural and/or cross-cultural characteristics in applying cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to Korean clients under the following categories: (a) shamanistic healing, (b) dropping out in the initial stage of therapy, (c) being afraid of negative judgments from the therapist and therapeutic failure, (d) fear of being stigmatized by a medical term, (e) religious faith, (f) personal history about trauma or sexual issues, (g) when parents are the source of their children's problems, (h) hwa-byung as a psychosomatic problem, and (i) need for one shot therapy. The ideas presented in this article should be taken only as a framework for beginning to work with this client group. The tremendous varieties among Koreans require great care to avoid overgeneralization regarding clients and appropriate treatment methods. Nevertheless, with this caveat, the suggested solutions may be useful to cross-cultural therapists who work with Koreans.

Cognitive behavioral therapies are now considered the treatment of choice for a wide variety of emotional disorders. Despite the increasing utilization of these techniques, the majority of practicing clinicians are unfamiliar with cognitive behavioral treatments. Some have concluded that complex manualized protocols have discouraged dissemination and effective training. Yet, as research on the etiology and nature of emotional disorders progresses, it is becoming clear that the various emotional disorders may actually emerge from similar latent structures or processes. This new understanding suggests the possibility of extracting a set of psychological principles that could be integrated into a single, cohesive treatment protocol and applied to any emotional disorder. Based on emerging data and theory from learning, emotional development and regulation, and cognitive science, three principles have been identified that may be fundamental to the treatment of emotional disorders. These include (a) altering antecedent cognitive reappraisals; (b) preventing emotional avoidance; and (c) modifying action tendencies. Data from the clinical application of the protocol will be presented for an adult population. In addition, the evolution and initial usage of an adaptation of the treatment of emotional disorders in adolescents will be reviewed. Although still in the early stages of development, this unified approach may represent a more efficient, and possibly more efficacious, way to ameliorate overlapping emotional disorder symptomatology (comorbidity) ; in addition to facilitating effective dissemination of empirically supported treatments to practicing clinicians.

Although cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has been used in quite a few Asian countries for many decades, it has been suggested that a significant barrier for the advancement of research and training in CBT among CBT practitioners has been a lack of a regularized opportunity for networking. This paper presents a brief history of the development of an Asian CBT network. The development of the network started in 1990 (Oei, 1998). Since then, 5 Asian CBT Conferences have been completed successfully; the sixth Conference will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2018. In addition, the Asian Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Association (ACBTA) supported by many Asian countries' CBT groups was also established to provide a firm and durable organization. Formal links with the well-established World Congress Committee (WCC) in Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies were made by requesting ACBTA membership in the WCC. Progress in CBT research, training, and practices has been made in the last few decades. Further progress can and will be made. Asian CBT has started out well in this long journey, and it will end up well.

The focus of this article was on providing updates on the neurocircuitry of anxiety disorder, partly with the aim of providing a clinical foundation for approaching the symptoms and cognitive-behavioral therapy of these conditions. Both animal and clinical studies indicate that the amygdala and paralimbic structures play an important role in conditioned fear, and hyperactivation of the limbic system is characteristic of a number of different anxiety disorders. Paralimbic regions such as anterior cingulate appears to play a key role in the interface of cognition and emotion. In addition, cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical pathways may be important in anxiety disorders, particularly in OCD. Treatment, which focused on reversing the effects of fear conditioning on psychological, somatic and behavioral symptoms associated with the efferent arm of the anxiety circuit, has been shown to be effective. The various psychotherapies target the cortical components and the explicit memory systems of the hippocampus and implicit memory of the amygdala. Behavioural therapies such as systematic desensitization or exposure produce "deconditioning", which works mainly on the implicit memory system (amygdala) and follow by retraining hippocampal neurons to reorganize the contextual cues that they store, so that they are no longer associated with danger signal and no longer produce the fear conditioning response. Cognitive therapy or other "speaking psychotherapies", in which the contextual memories are explored, may attack the same problem from the cortical level, mainly in temporal and prefrontal areas. Cognitive-behavioral therapies have been designed to reverse the impact of fear conditioning from both cortical and limbic perspectives.

The principles of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) are considered to be cross-culturally applicable because the assessment and intervention programs are interrelated and, by definition, contextually designed and empirically evaluated. In the prevailing age of the evidence-based practice of psychotherapy, this special section aims to specify cultural adaptation elements of CBT in an Asian socio-cultural context. Progress made in the practice of CBT in Asia through the establishment of the Asian CBT Association (ACBTA) is reviewed, and various functional roles of culture in the application of CBT in Asia are considered. The 3 invited articles and a commentary are by Drs. Akihito Masuda, Young Hee Choi, Tori Andrews and Tian Po Oei, and Gordon C. Nagayama Hall; their papers were originally presented at the 4^<th> Asian Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) Conference 2013 Tokyo, and were subsequently updated for the present Special Section of the Japanese Journal of Behavior Therapy, the flagship journal of the Japanese Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

The development of behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy is closely related to the overall development of psychotherapy in China. This paper starts with a brief introduction of the development of psychotherapy in China, followed with a description of the development and status of behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy in China and the impacts of Eastern ideology and philosophy on these types of therapies. It also reveals the problems existing in this field and suggests directions for future developments.
