Free vortex cyclones are used in various industrial fields because of their simple structure, low equipment investment, easy maintenance and low running cost. Recent studies have improved their performances. A broad range of applications of free vortex cyclones are expected for industrial and especially high temparature dust collections. However, there are still many phenomena that need to be made clearly.In this study, the performances of free vortex cyclones as dust collectors have been experimentally studied under various operating conditions using several types of cyclones and with several kinds of wall surface roughness. It was found that the addition of a little friction resistance to a cyclone's cylindrical wall is desirable to reduce pressure loss without reducing collection efficiency. On the other hand, a special type of cyclone is capable of better performance than that of the normal type. Its pressure loss is lower, and its collection efficiency is slightly higher than the normal type. A cylindrical type has a performace similar to a normal one, but a conical type is inferior. A slightly eccentric exit pipe does not have much effect on the cyclone's performance.

New microbial dispersants, CF2399 and CF2403, were discovered in a culture broth of fungi. In this study, we examined the adsorption of CF2399 and CF2403 to Titanium oxide (TiO2) particles, and synthesized the derivatives of CF2399 and evaluated them as a dispersant using the Copper (II) phthalocyanine pigment. Several examinations showed that the adsorption of CF2403 onto the particles is stronger than CF2399. Through the adsorption isotherm of CF2403 onto the inorganic pigment, we inferred that CF2403 has two adsorption systems of single-or double-layer due to their existent rates. The hydrophobic derivatives of CF2399 have higher activity of dispersion to the organic pigment than CF2399. We ascertained that the addition of hydrophobic group caused an increase in the adsorption rate to the hydrophobic pigment.

The wear characteristics of ZrO<sub>2</sub> balls, which were prepared under several conditions, were investigated.<br>The wear loss of ZrO<sub>2</sub> balls was attributed to the materials of the tank, such as Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, ZrO<sub>2</sub>, and urethane. The wear loss of ZrO<sub>2</sub> balls using a mill with an Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> lining was larger than that using a mill with ZrO<sub>2</sub> or urethane. This result indicated that the wear particles of the Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> lining worn by ZrO<sub>2</sub> balls attacked the surface of the ZrO<sub>2</sub> balls and promoted the wear of the balls, because Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> particles are harder than ZrO<sub>2</sub> balls.<br>Also, the wear loss of the ZrO<sub>2</sub> balls depended mainly on the grain size, fracture toughness and strength of the balls.<br>The SEM of the worn surface showed some defects and pores, and the wear mode was primarily intergranular.<br>It was supposed that phase transformation also had an influence on the wear of the balls.

The transition phenomenon, which is a feature of the filtration properties of non-woven fabric filter, is the change in filtration mode during filtration from the first stage of deep bed filtration to the second stage of surface blocking filtration or the cake filtration. In this study the effect of filter structure in depth direction on the transition phenomenon was studied with the filters prepared by layering three types of polypropylene non-woven fabric filters and binary mixture suspension of uniform PMMA particles. The change in the apparent pore size distribution of prepared filters was measured by the differential flow method. In the case of filters stacked with the same type of filters the change in the filtration performance by the stacking could be explained by the change in the surface blocking filtration condition in the first stage filtration period and it could be roughly predicted from the change in the apparent pore size distribution. But in the case of the filters stacked with different types of filters the change in the filtration performance did not show clear trends with the stacking condition and could not be explained from the change in the apparent pore size distribution.

The Mie's theory of light scattering by a small spherical particle was reviewed in details. It is a classic theory in which the light is treated as an electromagnetic wave, and the incident light activates oscillation of polarized charge in a sphere which results in a radiation of electromagnetic wave as the scattered light. The mathematical realization of the theory consists of some steps as: (1) vector wave equation is derived from Maxwell's equations, (2) general solution of the vector wave equation is obtained on spherical coordinates, (3) plane wave as incident light is expanded on the spherical coordinates, (4) scattered wave from the sphere satisfying the boundary conditions is obtained. Each step was explained in details in the review.

Numerical modeling of individual particle motion and fluid flow in an impact pulverizer was conducted using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) - Discrete Phase Model (DPM) coupling model. The impact pulverizer consists of high-speed rotating hammers and a static concavo-convex stator. Influences of the rotor geometries on particle impacts against stator walls were investigated. It was found that particles in the impact pulverizer were accelerated by the fluid drag force caused by the rotating hammers but not by the impact force from the hammers, resulting in impacts against walls of the static stator. Velocities and frequencies of the impacts between particles and walls of the static stator were analyzed under various number of hammers and clearances. As the number of hammers increased, the velocity and frequency increased because velocity of the fluid in circumference of the grinding chamber increased. The number of particle impacts against walls of the static stator decreased with an increase in the clearance. The impact energy which was calculated from the velocity and frequency of the particle impacts has the similar tendency with the experimental ones.

In industrial arena, there are many solid-liquid two phase flow systems like mixing vessels, glass furnaces, solid-liquid separation equipments, etc. Numerical simulations are promising approach to understand the phenomena. Numerical analyses by the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach were performed in the past studies. The Eulerian-Lagrangian methods were applied to various solid-liquid flow systems without the free surfaces. On the other hand, numerical models which can treat the solid-liquid flows involving free surface were hardly developed so far. Hence, in the current study, we develop a Lagrangian-Lagrangian coupling methods to perform the fast simulation of the solid-liquid flows. The liquid phase were modeled by the Explicit Moving Particle Simulation (E-MPS) method. The E-MPS method can simulate the free surface flows easily. The DEM / E-MPS method was applied to a solid-liquid flow in a pipeline. The simulations were performed by changing the acoustic velocity. The simulation results, namely, the solid particle distribution, pressure and fluid velocity were compared in the present study. The DEM / E-MPS method is shown to make possible to perform the fast simulation by assuaging the acoustic velocity.
