We consider multiclass Markovian polling systems with feedback and analyze their average performance measures. Scheduling in polling systems has many applications in computer and communication systems. We utilize the framework that has been effectively used to analyze various composite scheduling algorithms in many types of multiclass queues systematically in conjunction with the functional computation method (Hirayama in Naval Research Logistics 50:719–741, 2003; Journal of the Operations Research Society of Japan 48:226–255, 2005; Advances in queueing theory and network applications, pp. 119–146, Springer, New York, 2009a; Journal of Industrial and Management Optimization 6:541–568, 2010).We define the conditional expected values of the performance measures such as the sojourn times as functions of the system state and find their expressions by solving some equations. Then from these expressions, we derive the average numbers of customers and the average sojourn times for all service stages of customers circulating the system. We consider their application to a packet scheduling problem where multiple categories of packets share a resource.

We consider fixed-size estimation for a linear function of means fromindependent and normally distributed populations having unknown and respectivevariances.We construct a fixed-width confidence interval with required accuracy aboutthe magnitude of the length and the confidence coefficient. We propose a two-stageestimation methodology having the asymptotic second-order consistency with therequired accuracy. The key is the asymptotic second-order analysis about the riskfunction.We give a variety of asymptotic characteristics about the estimation methodology,such as asymptotic sample size and asymptotic Fisher-information. With thehelp of the asymptotic second-order analysis, we also explore a number of generalizationsand extensions of the two-stage methodology to such as bounded risk pointestimation, multiple comparisons among components between the populations, andpower analysis in equivalence tests to plan the appropriate sample size for a study.

We construct a mathematical model for the dynamic behavior of hip- pocampus. The model is described by the skew product transformation in terms of chaotic dynamics and contracting dynamics. In the contracting subspace, fractal objects are generated. We show that such fractal objects are characterized by a code of a temporal sequence generated by chaotic dynamics.

Efficiency of novel fiber formation was much improved in protoplast culture of embryogenic cells (ECs) of a conifer, Larix leptolepis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Gord., by pre-culturing ECs in a medium containing a high concentration of glutamine (13.7 mM). The fibrillar substructures of large and elongated fibers of protoplasts isolated from Larix ECs were investigated by laser confocal scanning microscopy (LCSM) after Aniline Blue staining and atomic force microscopy (AFM) using a micromanipulator without any pre-treatment. Fibers were composed of bundles of fibrils and subfibrils, whose diameters were defined as 0.7 and 0.17 mu m, respectively, by image analysis after LCSM and AFM. These fibers were proven to be composed of callose by using specific degrading enzymes for beta-1,4-glucan and beta-1,3-glucan.

When larvae of the salamander Hynobius retardatus were reared at a hightemperature (28°C) during their thermosensitive period (TSP: from 15 to 30 days after hatching),all larvae developed to phenotypic females irrespective of their genetic sexes. Hynobius P450aromatase (P450arom) and Dmrt-1 cDNAs were isolated and their expression pattern wasanalyzed by competitive and conventional RT-PCR. While P450arom gene was expressedpredominantly in the ovary, Dmrt-1 was expressed exclusively in the testis. When larvae werereared at the female-producing temperature (28°C) during the TSP, strong expression of theP450arom and complete suppression of the Dmrt-1 genes were induced in all experimentallarvae. Up-regulation of the P450arom and down-regulation of Dmrt-1 genes even in geneticmales constitute a part of the molecular biological cascade for the temperature-dependent sexreversal from genetic males to phenotypic females in this salamander.
