It is a great pleasure for us to hold the 10 th Annual Meeting of the Japan Association of Breast Cancer Screening in the year 2000. In this memorial year, it is important and significant to leave on record “the history of breast cancer screening in Japan”. Although the cancer screening program in Japan was started for stomach and uterine cancers in approximately 1960, breast cancer screening began almost five years later. However, several years before this, a few tentative programs of breast screening were performed by very small groups in rural regions between 1961 and 1964. From then until now, the history of breast cancer screening can be divided into the following three stages : 1) the “dawn” period, the time of individual and regional projects (1961-1974) ; 2) the period of the Japan Cancer Society and the Japanese Breast Cancer Society (1974-1990) ; 3) the period of the Japan Association of Breast Cancer Screening (1991-present date)<BR>During each of the above periods, breast cancer screening projects in Japan have gradually matured and extended to large-scale projects throughout the country, together with the introduction of basic guide-lines, a data-analysis system and academic annual meetings.
