Sashiko can be divided into the original stage Sashiko and the developmental stage Sashiko by stages. In the first stage, Sashiko was used mainly for the purpose of reinforcement, keeping warmth and waterproof. In the Second stage, Sashiko was used for ornament rather than the material faculties in the first stage mentioned above. Generally Sashiko refers to the second stage Sashiko in a narrow sense. The unique Sashiko in the Northeastean provinces of Japan is distributed mainly into next six areas.
