Muneyoshi Yanagi is known as the founder of Mingei Undou (folk arts revitalistic movement) in which he and his comrades reevaluated many traditional arts that had been regarded as valueless in many cultural areas. It is not well known, however, that the starting point of Mingei Undou was Yanagi's encounters with the Korean people and their traditional folk arts. On his first trip to Korea, Yanagi came across the beauty of its traditional folk arts and found the Korean people's collective mind within them. In those days (1910-1945), the people were suffering under Japanese colonial rule. They were not allowed to say or do anything against the colonial policy. Yanagi and his comrades decided to speak and work on behalf of the Korean people. Yanagi praised Korean traditional folk arts, defended the Korean people who created those arts, and made efforts to build an environment in which Japan and Korea could coexist in peace. These activities gave rise to Mingei Undou. This article focuses on the relationship between Yanagi and Korea.
