近年のモバイルコンピューティング技術の発展により,ユーザは自分用のPDA(Personal Digital Assistant)を持ち歩くようになった.PDAの用途は多岐にわたり,特に今後は音楽を中心としたエンターテイメント利用の重要性が高まると予想される.しかし,現在の音楽アプリケーションは基本的に聴くだけのものが多く,演奏を楽しんだり周りの音楽に参加したりするといった能動的なものがほとんど存在していなかった.そこで,筆者らの研究グループでは,PDAを用いて場所を問わずに気軽に音楽演奏を楽しむためのモバイル楽器に関する研究を進めている.本稿ではそのようなモバイル楽器の1つであるDoublePad/Bassを構築することを目的とする.DoublePad/Bassはタッチパネル式のPDAを2つ用いたシステムで,それぞれのPDAを左右の手の入力に割り当てることでエレクトリックベースの奏法を想定した入力方法を実現している.したがって,本物のベースを演奏できる人が場所を問わずにその腕前を披露できる.また,楽器初心者でもある程度の演奏ができるように簡易演奏モードを用意している.本システムを用いることでいつでもどこでも気軽に演奏でき,同じように演奏をしている人たちとのコラボレーションも可能となる.As a result of advancement in mobile computing technologies,it becomes common for users to carry a PDA (PersonalDigital Assistant) with them wherever they go. PDAs can be used forvarious purposes, and applications for entertainment, especially thosecentering on music, are expected to gain more importance. However,most current mobile applications only allow users to listen to music andthere are few applications that enable users to enjoy and participatein playing music. Therefore, our research group proposes mobile electronic musical instruments to enable users to enjoy playing music anywhere. In this paper, the goal of our study is to construct theDoublePad/Bass as such a mobile musical instrument. The DoublePad/Bass uses two PDAs with a touch panel display, and realizes the input by allocating two PDAs for inputs at each hand like playing an electric bass. Thus, musicians who can play an electric bass can also play the DoublePad/Bass with little practice. Moreover, the system provides asimple playing mode for users who are not familiar with playing musicto enable them to play music easily. Using this system, users can playmusic no matter where they are, by themselves or by collaborating withothers.
