これまで親密性と匿名性は相容れないものであった。つまり、親密であると匿名ではないし、匿名なら親密ではなかった。ところが、今日の新しいメディア状況の中で、むしろ匿名だから親密になれるという関係が生まれてきている。このような匿名性を前提にしたメディア上の親密な他者をIntimate Strangerと呼んでおきたい。Intimate Strangerとの関係を支えるものが、インスタントメッセンジャーなどのP2P技術である。ただ、そこには「オリジナルの私」と「本当の私」が不協和を引き起こす危険が存在している。それにもかかわらず、人々がインターネットの世界に魅せられていくのはなぜだろうか。それは、人々が、メディアの中に新しいアウラ「デジタルアウラ」を見つけたからである。Intimacy and anonymity are conflicting in today's technological society. If people are able to have an intimate relationship, it is not considered and anonymous relationship. But of course, it is not an intimate relationship if they have anonymous properties. However, in today's new media situation, these anonymous relationships automatically become intimate relationships. An anonymous and intimate friend within the media world is referred to as an "intimate stranger". It is called P2P technology and an example of this technology would be the increasingly popular "Instant Messenger". The communication program, "Instant Messanger" supports this concept of the "intimate stranger". It allows one to communicate intimately as well as be completely anonymous by the distance that is kept through media and technology. Therefor, the "self" in media does not harmonize with the so-called original concept of "self". Why are people so intrigued, fascinated, and addicted to the world of the Internet? The idea of "Digital AURA" can be a fundamental explanation to why people are increasingly drawn to the Internet.
