画像のような視覚メディアは、多くの感性的情報を人間に与え、我々はこのような情報を、無意識的に画像の検索などの際に利用していると考えられる。画像処理操作により、画像中から、このような感性的要素を抽出することができれば、これらの情報は、大規模な画像データベースから目的の画像を検索するために、有効に利用することができる。ここでは、画像のひとつのカテゴリーとして絵画を選び、絵画の中から感性的要素を抽出し、検索に利用する方法について報告する。対象とした絵画は近代日本の花鳥画である。まず最初に、花鳥画について、SD法と因子分析により、印象構造の抽出を試みた。この結果、絵画の印象は描かれているモチーフにより支配される傾向が強く、また、モチーフを描くために使用されている色彩は、絵画の中で、比較的目立つ色であることが多いことが分かった。このような観点から、画像処理手法により、対象の絵画から、主要な色の領域と背景の色の領域を抽出し、これらの情報を用いて絵画の検索を行う手法について述べる。さらに、色彩の組み合わせと印象語との対応データを利用して、印象語を入力し、その印象語に対応した絵画を検索することも試みた。いずれも比較的簡単な処理であるが、絵画の検索の一つの方法として有効であることが判明した。Visual image data usually give us impression-related information, which we unconsciously use for recalling and retrieving images. Method of image processing for extracting these impression-related factors from image data makes it possible to efficiently retrieve data from a large-scale image database. We have been working with the method for extracting some impression-related factors from color paintings, especially Japanese paintings. This paper describes a method for indexing color paintings by extracting "principal" color regions and background color regions from paintings. Paintings in the database can be retrieved by specifying the color and location of principal color regions as well as background colors. Because a combination of colors induces some specific impression which can be expressed by a corresponding word, this relationship can be used for retrieving paintings by giving impression words. The method described here is rather simple, but the processing results has been fairly satisfactory.
