幼児期の子どもが選択する絵本は,どのような絵本であろうか。それは大人の選択する絵本と一致しているであろうか。このことを明らかにする目的で,異なるタイプの2冊の物語絵本を取り上げ,比較研究を行った。取り上げた絵本は,「うさこちゃんのたんじょうび」(福音館1982年)と「ノンタンのたんじょうび」(偕成社1980年)である。幼稚園児(計165名)を対象として,絵本に対する好みの実態調査を行った。子ども達が選んだ絵本は,識者が推薦し,一般的にも高い評価を得ている前者の絵本ではなく,後者の絵本が圧倒的な支持を得ていることがわかった。幼児に支持されたのは1子どもの興味を引くと共に理解しやすい絵の描き方,2子どもの言語水準にみあったことば表現3絵と文が効果的に適合して豊かな物語世界を構築していること4子どもの共感を呼ぶ主人公像や絵本主題を後者の絵本が具備していることが原因であろうと判断した。識者の推薦する絵本と子どもが選択する絵本とは,大きなズレがあることが判明した。A comparative study two different types of illustrated story books was conducted,with the objective of clarifying whether or not picture books chosen by young children would be the same as those chosen by adults:the books used in this study"Usakochan's Birthday"(published by Fukuinkan,1982)and"Nontan"s Birthday'(published by Kaiseisha,1980).This investigation of actual preferences for books was carried out using kindergarten pupils(a total of 165 children).Our investigation revealed that the picture book,"Nontan's Birthday"was the overwhelmingly favorite among these children,who preferred in to"Usakochan's Birthday",a picture book which has been highly appraised and recommended by well-informed adults including critics and experts on juvenile literature.We feel that"Nontan's Birthday"received the children's support for the following four reasons.1 The style of its drawing could be easily understood by children and generally attracted their interest.2 Its linguisticexpression matches the children's own language level.3 The illustrations conform effectively to the text,and together constitute a rich"story world".4 this picture book contains images of heroes and themes,which can arouse the sympathy of children.The results of this study indicate that there is a great difference between the type of picture book selected by children and the type of picture book recommended by critics and experts juvenile literature.
