We investigated toothbrushing habits and toothpaste use, especially of fluoride toothpaste, of Japanese young children in Fukuoka. Parents of 767 young children aged between 1.5 and 4 years completed the questionnaire we distributed. The total response rate was 90.0%. The present findings were compared with those of a similar investigation in 1992. The findings were as follows: 1. Most young children brushed their teeth at least once a day assisted by their parents. 2. Few young children aged 1.5 years used toothpaste. About 65%-70% of young children aged 3 and 4 years used toothpaste. There was little change in these findings in 1992 and 2000. 3. Few children aged 1.5 years used fluoride toothpaste. About 50% of young children aged 3 and 4 years used fluoride toothpaste. The annual market share of fluoride toothpaste in Japan had increased from 39% in 1992 to 77% in 1999. It is still less however, than those of other highly developed countries. The percentage of young children who use fluoride toothpaste may be passive due to the little information available on the effects of fluoride toothpaste. Dentists, dental hygienists and other dental personnel should provide information fluoride toothpaste and strongly recommend its use among parents in Japan.
