Joseph Beuys who always stimulated artistic circles from the 1970s to his death over dozens of years, and was regarded as the most important artist in Germany was the student of Ewald Matare (1887-1965) at the Art Academy of Dusseldolf. The students of Matare include various engravers who are playing active roles in the contemporary German engraver's circle, such as Erwin Heerich, George Meistermann, Gunter Haese and Elma Hildebrandt. Matare himself won the Art Prize of Nordrhein Westfalen State in 1953, and was requested to send his works to large scale exhibitions overseas, and thus he was esteemed as an internationally excellent artist. He had also exhibited his works in the early Documenta of Cassel and so the roles he and his students have played in the contemporary fine arts of Germany is big. In this research, based on a careful study of the doctoral dissertation "Art Teaching Method of Ewald Matare" by Roland Meyer-Petzold, the author would like to describe how Matare's lesson was performed and why Matare's art education brought about such a great effect. In the above-mentioned study, the author tried to make a summary of the dissertation in Japanese. Last year, the summary was used as a text for the "art pedagogy lecture" in the graduate school and in a seminar for the forth year students in which the author tried to study desirable methods of fine art education.
