An experiment was conducted on the colour of various samples (cotton, wool, nylon) dyed using vegetable dyes consisting of onion skin and tumeric along with the effects of fibre type and mordants on colour fastness to daylight and colour fastness to washing the results of wich are described below. Although colour fastness to daylight of fabric dyed with vegetable dye differs according to the type of fibre and vegetable dye as well as the mordant used, colour fastness to washing was high for all fabrics tested, and even cotton, wool and nylon, which have a low colour fastness to daylight, were not observed to demonstrate significant fading even when washed 30 times. When cotton was dyed with onion skin, the colour fastness to daylight was low for tin-based mordants that dye fabrics to a whitish tint. In the case of not using a mordant or using an aluminum-based mordant, although a decreased due to exposure to daylight, the decrease was comparatively small, there was less fading than in the case of tin, and colour fastness to daylight was comparatively high. In the case of wool and nylon dyed with onion skin, both colour fastness to daylight and colour fastness to washing were high. However, a decressed somewhat following exposure to daylight. Samples dyed with tumeric demonstrated low colour fastness to daylight as compared with samples dyed with onion skin, and with respect to cotton samples dyed with tumeric in particular, considerable fading was observed following exposure to daylight for about 5 days. Colour fastness to daylight was particularly low when using a tin-based mordant.
