The Japanese word nanka can be a pronoun, adverb, particle and a discourse marker. This paper hypothesizes that nanka as a discourse marker can be observed in its syntactic position which is far from the predicate as in nanka... muzukashii 'Umm...(it's) difficult'. That is, more there are linguistic elements between nanka and the predicate, more likely the nanka can function as a discourse marker. This paper also examines that nanka as a discourse marker is resulted as a 'bleaching' phenomenon in its gramaticalization.
