People in the Edo period considered raising a child to become a full-fledged adult in the society as the most important matter in life only next to running their family business. This often gave rise to the importance of mental attitudes and discipline of the parents themselves. We can see in the book called Yoiku Ohrai the perspectives on education generally held by the people in the Edo period. In this article, I will closely examine such perspectives on child raising discussed in Yoiku Ohrai, and discuss them with special references to parents' mental attitudes, moral education, and human relationships.
