People in the Edo period considered raising a child to become a full-fledged adult in the society as the most important matter in life only next to running their family business. This often gave rise to the importance of mental attitudes and discipline of the parents themselves. We can see in the book called Yoiku Ohrai the perspectives on education generally held by the people in the Edo period. In this article, I will closely examine such perspectives on child raising discussed in Yoiku Ohrai, and discuss them with special references to parents' mental attitudes, moral education, and human relationships.

The purpose of this article is to elucidate the significance of the concept of “The Way of Heaven”(Tendo). First, the concept of “The Way of Heaven” in some enlightenment books, such as Shingakugorinsho, etc., is examined. Next, the meaning of “The Way of Heaven” in the secret books of martial arts, such as Heihokadensho, etc., is defined. Through a comparison of these two concepts of “The Way of Heaven” follows, the similarities between the two schools of thoughts in discussed. The results of this article are summarized as follows:1) Originally “The Way of Heaven” includes not only the rules of nature but also the rules of morals or “The Way of Man” (Jindo). “The Way of Heaven” as found in the enlightenment books, such as Shingakugorinsho, etc., supports the ideology of the Tokugawa Bakufu, and is based on the unification of the three schools of thoughts, Shinto, Confucianism, and Buddhism.2) “The Way of Heaven” in the secret books of martial arts, such as Heihokadensho, is derived from San-Rue, and permits the unavoidable fight in the cause of justice. This idea was considered suitable for the policy of the Tokugawa Bakufu. According to the written prayer (Kishoumon), “The Way of Heaven” was considered to be a god or buddha. In other words, “The Way of Heaven” in Martial Arts was also considered to have a commonality with both Shintoism and Buddhism.3) As has been examined in this paper, the idea of “The Way of Heaven” in the enlightenment writings and the martial arts writings of the Edo Period contained various and complex meanings, borrowing from the different philosophical and cultural traditions of the Period. In short, “The Way of Heaven”is a “master key”, which elucidates the commonality of Shinto, Confucian, and Buddhist thoughts, as well as martial arts. Therefore, the philosophical thought of martial arts compares favorably with the three schools of thoughts (Shinto, Confucianism, and Buddhism) through the foundation of “The Way of Heaven”.

We fabricated bismuth-telluride based thin films and their in-plane thermoelectric micro-generators on a free standing silicon nitride thin film by using the flash evaporation method through shadow masks. The shadow masks are fabricated by standard micro-fabrication processes. The fabricated micro-generators are just put on a heated plate, and the open-circuit output voltages of micro-generators are measured by a digital voltmeter. The maximum measured voltage is about 40mV at 10K temperature difference. The output voltage is comparable to the bulk value although the device consists of as-grown thin films.

The purpose of this article is to compare strategy in the Sonshi School with that in the Shinkage-Yagyu School. In particular, kido or the “tricky way” is compared with hyori or “tactics”, because these two words are key words in both strategies. Kido implies a movement of troops, whereas hyori means action in tachiai or man to man combat. However, hyori was also thought to be applicable to a movement of troops as well. Therefore, it is possible to compare these two concepts. The results of this article are summarized as follows:1) Kido or tricky way in Sonshi means unusuality in the battlefield. Hyori or tactics in the Shinkage-Yagyu School deceives an opponent in tachiai. In this point kido can be considered to be similar to hyori.2) A difference between kido, tricky way, and hyori, tactics, is that kido in Sonshi is just strategy, and has nothing to do with ethics. However, hyori or tactics in the Shinkage-Yagyu School obtains truth through falsehood, has truth in itself, and devises a stratagem. Since hyori in the Shinkage-Yagyu School is suitable for tendo or Natural Reason, hyori is not incompatible with ethics when considering aspects of the Shinkage-Yagyu School.
