This study focused on female students to examine the trend of brown-bag lunch and surveyed the students' awareness of the factors considered while preparing lunch. This survey was conducted in 2009, and the participants were 72 freshman-year female university students. The survey results confirmed that the students brought a brown-bag lunch more than 70% of the time. Their reasons for bringing their own lunch were that it was "economical and thus one saves money" (60%) and that it was "good for one's health as it had well-balanced nutrition" (13%). In contrast, those who did not bring any lunch said that they did not wish to "prepare it and wash the lunchbox" (45%) and "there's no build" (27%). Fifty-three percent of the students prepared their own lunch, whereas forty-seven percent of the students would ask a family member to prepare it for them. Many students also prepared lunch for their respective families. The factors considered by the participants while preparing lunch included nutrition (38%), sanitation (29%), and the financial aspect (25%). While several students considered both nutritional balance and economic savings as important factors, many others focused only on the hygiene factor. Participants mentioned that they would also prefer a lunch box "that could keep food warm," "that was air tight," "that could hold soup without it leaking," "that was easy to clean," and "that did not hold steam pressure."
