The basic form of early waka rests on a correspondence between the representation of psychological states and that of material objects. The developnlent of lyric poetry may be seen as the process whereby the depiction of objects was suppressed and the psychological came to stand on its own. The independence of the psychological was not won in the course of waka history in isolation, but came into being through a dialectical relationship with narrative. As prosenarrative took over the function of representing the material world, poetry, standing in metaphoric relation to the prose, was able to devote itself to the expression of psychological states. The rise of lyric poetry may be seen to depend fundamentally on the act of writting.
