本稿では関係代名詞の2用法をめぐる問題点について,さまざまな角度から検討した。とりわけコンマの有無と制限的用法と非制限的用法との区別との関係について検討している。まず,制限的用法と非制限的用法の2用法についての議論では,特にコンマがないのに非制限的用法であるという関係代名詞の用法について考察した。その結果,事実としては,必ずしもコンマの有無のみで両者の対照が鮮やかに区別されるというようなことではないことが分かった。 また,そのことに関連して,日本語の修飾構造では制限,非制限の区別がしばしば曖昧になることについて吟味し,特に日本語の修飾構造と英語のそれとの違いなどについて論じた。英語では関係節を用いる場合,つねにその先行詞の全体を受けるか部分を受けるかによって,2用法の区別が基本的には存在するという違いがある。 そして,thatにも非制限的用法が存在することを確認し,その他のいわば中間的な用法として,who, which, whereなどの具体例を検討し,ときどきこのような用法が見られることについても議論した。そして,コンマの有無は関係代名詞の2用法の区別の絶対的な基準にはならないことを具体的に検証した。This paper is intended as a study of the restrictive and non-restrictive uses of relative pronouns in English. And so, we discussed those two uses of them from various points of view. We, in particular, examined the relationship of the commas and the two uses. Firstly we discussed this relationship, and in particular we had a close look at the examples of relative pronouns that are without commas whose uses are in fact non-restrictive, and we pointed out the fact that those two uses are not necessarily signaled by the presence or the absence of them. Secondly, in this connection, we discussed the correspondence between modifying structures in Japanese and those in English. And we pointed out the striking difference of the structures between the two languages, i.e., the Japanese language has always pre-modifying structures, and the English language has post-modifying structures when relative pronouns are employed. And we must note that there are examples that are restrictive when commas are used, and those that are non-restrictive when they are not used. Thirdly, we discussed whether the non-restrictive use of that exists or not, and we confirmed that that use of that does occur in English, though rarely in fact. Also we considered the uses of who, which, and where, which are sometimes employed non-restrictively without commas. And we can conclude that whether commas are employed or not in the sentences is not the absolute criterion by which we can distinguish the use of them.
