Melville molded three layers of meanings embedded in the Memnon Stone, which is shaped like a huge egg or an eye or a petrified whale. The first and natural implication of the stone is a headstone of innocence symbolizing the dead, innocent soul of Pierre. Secondly, it is a metaphor of "EI," the pamphlet's title, whose intrinsic and core meaning is "If." The third connotation insinuatingly chiseled in is Solomon's and Melville's view of life and the world, "All is vanity."Melville described in Pierre "the problems of the human heart in conflict with itself" as Faulkner phrased, but Melville's depictions of those problems were artistic byproducts of his pursuit of Gorgonian jealousy lurking at the bottom of the human heart.メルヴィルは, 巨大な卵もしくは目, あるいは石化した鯨のような形をしたメムノンの石に3重の意味を注入した. 第1の, そして自然な意味は, イノセンスの墓石であり, それは死せるピエールの純真な魂を象徴している. 第2に, この石はパンフレットのタイトル"EI"のメタフォーであり, その本質的,核心的意味は"If"である. そして, 巧妙に刻み込まれた第3の含意は, 「すべて空なり」というソロモンおよびメルヴィルの人生観と世界観である.メルヴィルは, フォークナーの言う「葛藤する人間の心の諸問題」を『ピエール』に描出したが, それらの描出は, 彼が人間の心の奥底に潜むゴルゴンのごとき嫉妬心を追究する過程での芸術的副産物であった.
