This paper examines how college internship programs in Japan have affected job hunting and recruitment activities under the current global economic crisis. New college graduates encounter a tough job market. They become nervous about their future. Job hunting and recruitment activities start earlier and these activities are more severe and prolonged because of economic stagnation. Internship programs in Japan were introduced in 1997 by the government. Corporations in Japan have accepted, both as a social responsibility and as a public relations opportunity. In the past ten years, however, internship programs have become a tool to recruit freshman employees. In view of this, it is important for educators to be more sensitive as they match students to internship programs.
