旧軍が軍用地または艦艇内に設けた神社を、営内神社・校内神社・艦内神社などと称した(以下、営内神社等と総称する)。営内神社等は、今まで殆ど顧みられず、研究もされてこなかった。それは何故なのか、という記録と記憶の問題ととともに、収集したデータから営内神社等とは何なのかという基本的・概略的な大枠を捉えようとしたものである。営内神社等は、法令上は神祠として扱われ、広義には軍施設内に設けられた神祠と定義することができる。稲荷神などを祀る事例が初期に散見することから、邸内神祠・屋敷神の性格を持つもので、艦内神社の船霊がそれに相当するであろう。しかし、やがてこの稲荷祠を天照大神などを祀る神祠に変えた事例が示すように、いわゆる国家神道下に天照大神や靖國神社祭神、軍神や殉職者などを祀る神祠に大きく変貌を見せるようになり、このような神祠が昭和に入ると盛んに創建された。後者を狭義の営内神社等とみることができる。その性格は多様である。戦死病歿者を祀った場合は、靖国神社・護國神社と共通する招魂社的性格をもちながらも、特に顕彰において役割の違いがあったと思われる。殉職者を祀った場合は、靖國神社と異なる招魂社的性格をもったものといえよう。神祇を祀り武運長久等を祈る守護神的な性格、敬神崇祖の精神を涵養し、神明に誓い人格を陶冶するいう精神教育の機能なども見られた。招魂社的な神祠も、慰霊・顕彰とともに、尽忠報国を誓う精神教育の役割を備えていた。また、営内神社等は近代の創建神社の範疇に入るべき性格や、海外の駐屯地に営内神社を遷座・創祀したことからは、海外神社に含めるべき性格ももっている。このように多様な性格を持つ営内神社は、軍が管理した神社として、近代の戦争と宗教を理解する上で極めて重要な神社であるといえる。今や数少なくなった軍の経験者の記憶の中から、また僅かに残された資料から、営内神社等とは何なのかを探る。Shrines built on military land and naval vessels by the former Japanese military went by several names in Japanese, including "einai jinja", "konai jinja" and "teinai jinja". Deities and those who died or were wounded in war were worshipped in these shrines, which, according to law, should have been called "jingi". This paper explores why the military built these shrines, how they functioned and how they met their end. It also attempts to uncover the significance of the construction of shrines dedicated to the war dead in the context of "shokonsha", "gokoku shrine", "Yasukuni Shrine" and "cenotaphs (chukon-hi)" which were shrines dedicated to the souls of those who lost their lives for their country, and various other memorials. Virtually no records survive of these military shrines, nor is there much history of research on this subject. Today, most have faded into oblivion leaving no trace, with but a few skeletons remaining. As a result, these military shrines and the war and military life seen through them remain solely in the memories of the dwindling number of those who were in the military. It is through these few records and oral histories that this paper explores the significance of the existence of these shrines.
