'4 Stance Theory' is the latest theory that categorizes characteristics of body movement into four types. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of kendo teaching that applies 4 stance theory, with focus on changes in the striking time. The subjects of the study were 31 students (23 males and 11 females) who belonged to a university Kendo club. They were divided into 4 groups (A1, A2, B1 and B2) by type checking followed by measuring their striking times as pre-test. Each group was then given some instructions such as how to hold middle-guard position and how and with what image they move their bodies for striking, according to characteristics of their own types. Post-test was then conducted to compare their striking times with those of the pre-test. The results indicated that the average times of their striking actions were significantly shorten in all groups, irrespective of the differences in their types, the contents of instructions given, gender and levels. Thus it was suggested that teaching that applies 4 Stance Theory to Kendo could be a useful method to shorten practitioners' striking time.
