The Hayato were a tribal people who lived in southern Kyushu in ancient times, mainly on the Osumi and Satsuma Peninsulas in what is now Kagoshima Prefecture. There was a traditional sacred music and dance performance called Hayato-mai in this area, which was performed at the imperial court during the Nara period. Some theories suggest that it was related to the ritual of obedience to the Yamato Court. Gagaku, the ancient imperial court music of Japan, has four genres, Bugaku, Kangen, Utamono, and Kuniburinoutamai, to the last of which belongs Hayato-mai.
