A hemoperfusion system has been developed in which powdered activated charcoal are embedded in a polyporous polyurethane sheet.<br>In vitro adsorption studies have revealed that tree adsorption of bilirubin and other albumin bound substance by UPC is superior to that by non-coarted charcoal beads with low release of charcoal micro-particles.<br>During batch test removal rate of bilirubin in jaundice dog serum was about 60% by UPC.<br>Dogs with ligated bile duct were subjected to direct hemoperfusion (DHP) through UPC.<br>As a result of these studies, removal rats of bilirubin was about 40%.<br>There was a transient decrease in platelet and WBC during DHP with gradual recovery to the prevalue at the end of therapy.<br>These studies suggest the UPC-DHP is effective in the treatment of FHF.
