This paper aims to clarify the framework and characteristics of opera houses in present day Italy. The analysis is based on two original databases, one on opera performances and another on theatres. The main findings are listed as follows: 1)The main categories of the theatre for opera as prescribed by law are <i>Fondazione Lirica</i> and <i>Teatro di Tradizione</i> ; 2)The theatres that come under the categories supplement each other and cover all of Italy; 3)There are marked differences between representative theatres in both categories, in terms of organizational structure and frequency of opera performances; 4)Two frameworks of opera house can be established by the categories.
