研究ノート(Note)高等教育機関の効率性を定義し計測した上で、その改善を目指す研究が世界的に注目されている。教育における効率性の計測は重要なテーマであるにもかかわらず、高度な計量分析の手法が大学のような高等教育機関に応用されるようになったのは比較的最近のことであり、その研究の蓄積は多くない。本稿では確率的フロンティアモデルにより経済的効率性を分析するための計量分析の手法を概観し、あわせてそうした手法を大学の効率性の分析に用いた欧米の研究を簡潔に展望する。Higher education institutions worldwide are increasingly becoming the subject of analyses aimed at defining, measuring, and improving efficiency. However, despite the importance of efficiency measurement in higher education, it is only relatively recently that more advanced econometric measurement techniques have been applied to higher education institutions such as universities. We survey the underlying models and econometric techniques that have been used in studying economic efficiency in the stochastic frontier framework and present a brief review of the literature on stochastic frontier models for the efficiency analysis of universities.
