This paper aims to review the literature on econometric analysis of academic achievement among Japanese students. Recent development in the availability of rich data on students' academic performance enables researchers, including economists, to empirically analyze the determinants of students' academic performance. This paper reviews recent empirical studies in Japan on the education production function and the effect of class size reduction. The author shows estimation results of the education production function for eighth graders in Japanese public schools.
